Laws of Gravity - Sure, Edie Falco and Peter Greene are stars now, but back then they were complete unknowns.

i'd have to go with 'united 93' as well but 'bubble' is another good one that comes to mind.

I'd have to go with "The Bicycle Thief." Great performances by people who were picked off the streets to become actors.

Empire Strikes Back

Aside from that Harrison Ford fella and brief scenes with Sir Alec Guinness, that's it. No other actors ever did anything worthwhile. The director never had another notable film, and that was the last good movie written by the writer.

At the time? Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension. The only noteable actor at the time was Peter Weller. Even Jeff Goldblum wasn't a household name at the time.

That's my pick as well. I'm not quite sure we'll ever see another film end up so outstandingly perfect while using non-names/actors. Heck, it's hard for the biggest names in the business to get together and even come close to anything as beautiful and moving as Bicycle Thieves.
