Kingdom of the Spiders with The Shat.

Do I need to again mention that West Side Story is my favorite movie of all time?

I haven't seen them in a while, but from what I remember these Polanski films end on bleak notes:

Chinatown
Rosemary's Baby
The Tenant
The Ninth Gate

"There Will Be Blood" was pretty bleak.

Great movie, crazy ending. Daniel Day Lewis killed it - haven't been that riveted by a performance in a long time.

Can't agree with that one either.

Both endings were hopeful in my opinion.

yeah, i thought CoM or even "Pan's Labyrinth" , but those endings while sad did point to a positive outlook.

Fantastic choice. It is a truly great film and what an ending indeed.

It's been forever since I've seen it, but The Man Who Saw Tomorrow ruined many nights of my childhood, being that it dealt with the destruction of all mankind. It didn't help that Orson Welles narrated the damn thing with his most serious voice.

Some of these I disagree with. A sad ending, for me, doesn't equal a bleak ending. Like The Fountain, the ending was sad, but was about ultimate redemption and was actually moving, beautiful and hopeful on a higher level. Same with American Beauty, in the end Spacey's character got the fulfillment he always wanted, so it was sad, but not bleak.

Bleak to me is Awakenings, with Deniro and Williams....that ending left me so spent and depressed.

1984. The book and movie really drive the point home well.

Also should mention the original film, Wages of Fear, which that was a remake of. (Although, interestingly, the end scenes were different).

Yes! This was my first choice. It's too bad the U.S. remake went a happier ending - the original ending was so unsettling.

Fat Girl

Some may disagree, but I thought the end of Citizen Kane was devastating.
