The Orphanage
Just got back from seeing this.
It's the first movie Guillermo del Torro didn't direct, but produced. It mimicked his style and I was skeptical for the first half. However, the ending was the best I've seen since SE7EN. Four and a half out of Five. |
Agreed - I caught this several months ago at the New York Film Festival, and thought it was one of the better ghost stories to come along in quite a while.

I saw this at a sneak preview on Thursday, and man, did I love it. I thought it was very scary, but also managed to be quite poignant and sad. My friend didn't care for the ending, but I thought it was perfect and well-earned.
I hope a lot of people get to see this in its limited release. There was a short panel discussion after my screening, and they mentioned that an American remake has already been greenlit. |
I saw this at the Arclight last night. I thought it was good, even though it was very similar in tone and plot to films like The Devil's Backbone and The Others. I wasn't nuts about the ending, either. It may have been earned, but it was just a little too sappy-happy for my tastes. The creepy John Merrick mini-me was easily the scariest thing about the film. That noise he made in the house was disturbing. Regardless of it's few shortcomings it was a spooky, atmospheric film and I would certainly recommend it to anyone that is a fan of haunting horror films. 8/10.

Del Toro is the one behind the American remake though, so we'll see what happens with that.

Del Toro only Executive Produced, from what I could gleam from the poster.
Is this ever expanding? |
