I went to two free screening this week and I thought I would give you the heads up a couple of films I saw.

THE GRAND is a cast assemble with to many people to name. BUT IT WAS FREAKING HILARIOUS. I hate watching poker on television. Its the most boring thing but somehow they used the most boring thing and turned it into GOLD. Think BEST IN SHOW.

SEX AND DEATH 101 was pretty good as well. Basic romantic comedy but not much romance. Mostly just a the hottest woman in hollywood getting BANGED. By the way Winona Ryder, hasn't looked this hot in years.

So I must start by saying I hate musical. I hated RENT, I hated Moulin Rouge, and really hated Chicago. Musicals have never been my thing. My girlfriend made me watch this movie called Saawariya. I have to say its not bad. I wasn't really into the music but the visuals are amazing. It reminded me of the scenes from Hero or Golden Flower.

2008 Theatrical Releases -

Out of ***** :

Horton Hearts a Who - **1/2 / A few funny parts here and there but it just didn't really work for me. Reasonably well made, just not very memorable. My speck has unicorns that eat rainbows and poop butterflies being the odd highlight.

The Ruins - *** / A solid late night horror movie. Would have been better without a certain bit of CG.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - *** 1/2 / Yes, I liked it. The ending blew, but the ride was fun.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - *** 1/2 / Best Comedy so far this year, a good amount of heart with likable characters and solid acting.

10,000 BC - 1/2 / Amazing in how bad it is. Why any studio decided to allow this script to be made into a movie is beyond me.

Cloverfield - *** 1/2 / An excellently effective "experiment". Great visuals and an all around fun movie. Felt like a theme park ride.

Wanted - *** / Highly enjoyable flick.

Other Releases:

[REC] - *** 1/2 / An excellently effective "experiment". An all around fun movie. Felt like a theme park ride, or an episode of Cops with zombies.

Visually you won't ever see anything like "Saawariya". Ever. It is absolutely stunning. However, I wasn't a fan of the music. Just not my style. It's not bad, just not what I like. But yes, I recommend it. Big time. Just beautiful. And like you, I loathe musicals. "Once" aside. That was brilliant.

I just saw this awesome flick called LATHER EFFECT. Its like the big chill for this generation. I'm not sure if you've hard about it but its definitely one of my top 3 of the year so far. Especially since Indiana Jones sucked so bad.d

Is it just me or has there not been a single movie released this year that will be an Oscar nominee?

Edit to add: Good points below. I've always known that the dramatic Oscar winning sort of films tended to be released late in the year, but I always thought that is was more a majority of them, and not all of them. For example, Michael Clayton was an early last year, right? I guess I could google the recent years' nominees and check the release dates....

Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda will be up for Best Animated, a few will be up for visual/sound effects, but most Oscar nom pics don't sneak their way out until the Fall. Surfwise, [email protected], Blindsight, and Bigger, Stronger, Faster have shots at Best Docu (though since none are hugely political movies, nor star cute critters, it seems unlikely).

I would personally love to see My Winnipeg nominated for something (if eligable). Also The Visitor has some oscar hype for (Actor) Richard Jenkins as well as writer/director Thomas McCarthy. The Fall may find itself nominated for a thing or two as well.

It isn't that surprising, the beginning of the year (Jan & Feb) are the complete wasteland/dumping ground, March and April are the pre-summer season movies, May - August being the primary summer blockbuster season.

Late August and September are usually dumping grounds #2.

October, November, and December will see the release of the Oscar material.

In terms of critical ratings, the two highest rated "wide release" movies of 2008 have been Wall-E (96% recommended with 150 reviews) and Iron Man (93% recommended with 209 reviews).

Have you seen IT'S A BOY GIRL THING that movie is crazy. Kind of reminds of Dream A Little Dream or Like Father Like Son. Its your standard story of two people who switch personalities. while these movies are a dime a dozen these days, this one is actually funny. If you like the movie check out this :

Tropic Thunder was OK, not great. Most of the funny parts were in the previews. And Tom Cruise went way overboard on his performance (especially his dance moves)

I agree, absolutely TERRIBLE film. but...

a) please PLEASE tell me your going to rush out and rent the brilliantly funny original version, by the one and only John Waters?

b) i cant even remotely understand not liking Darjeeling Limited (if for nothing more then how fucking beautiful every shot in the movie is), and Bladerunner.

but to each their own i suppose. you really should watch the original Hairspray though because its amazing (and not a musical).
