2008 Theatrical Releases

Dark Knight
In Bruges
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire
Seven Pounds - I like dark and sad.
Cloverfield I am not one to overuse this term/opinion, but this is a "must see in the theater" movie. Much better than I expected, will likely see again soon, and a must buy on HD only when I get a huge screen and nice sound set-up.
Iron Man - Right up there with the first two Spider-Man and X-Men films.
[Rec] - 2008 release?
Burn After Reading
Get Smart - The trailers and clips I saw beforehand were absolutely horrible, completely unfunny. But I loved this, several LOL moments.
Quantum of Solace
Kung Fu Panda - Predictable, but lots of fun.
The Spiderwick Chronicles Very fun film. Much better than recent fantasy like The Golden Compass.
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed
Horton Hears a Who
The Incredible Hulk - Norton did well, looking forward to seeing his version of the film on DVD.
Marley & Me
Tale of Despereoux
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Baby Mama - I love Tina Fey in 30 Rock. Some really good lines, but seems like it could have been much better with a bit more script tweaking or editing maybe.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Would have rated it higher if they left out the aliens and some of the action scenes were more realistic.
Made of Honor - Not bad for a chick flick.
Mamma Mia! Abba is a guilty pleasure.
Mongol - A bit too slow. Some great cinematography.
The Other Boleyn Girl - Depressing. Well done though.
Run Fatboy Run
21 - Completely unlikable characters, while not necessarily a bad thing, bothered me here. I would have preferred to care for or have a bit of respect for at least one of the main players. Also didn't like the editing much.
Untraceable Very forgettable. Would have been a decent episode of CSI or a similar show, but mediocre as a feature.
Vantage Point - I liked the gimmick, although perhaps a bit overdone. Pretty predictable near
the end.
Wanted - Fun action romp.
Bedtime Stories
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - Really loved the first film, but this was a big letdown.
Hellboy 2
The Ruins
Sex in the City
10,000 B.C. Bleh.
What Happens in Vegas - Not as bad as I feared.
Don't Mess With the Zohan - Starts off pretty strong, but horribly unfunny second half.
88 Minutes
The Strangers - Trailer was scarier than the movie.
Wall-E - Somewhat sleep inducing. Wall-E is a one trick pony w/ no depth.
Doomsday "Pays homage" to several other films, but badly.
The Happening - Potentially good story, but the direction/acting was just terrible. Could be the worst big budget film I've ever seen outside of broad comedies. And I liked The Village and all Night's other films (haven't seen TLitW).
The Day the Earth Stood Still - You know its bad when Keanu's acting brings the film up a grade.
The Spirit - Never thought this year could end up with two films worse than The Happening.

DVD/Cable viewings and pre-2008 theatrical viewings two posts down.

Pre-2008 Releases Seen For The First Time in 2008

There Will Be Blood - theater - Film of the year, and DDL better win in a landslide.
An Affair to Remember
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - 3rd best film of 2007.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - theater - Amazing. I don't think I'd have the patience to work that hard to stay connected.
American Madness
An Angel at my Table
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - theater - A little too much gore perhaps, but a brilliant film.
Iron Man
Il Bodine
The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Departed
Punch Drunk Love
The French Connection
Will Penny - Wish I hadn't waited this long to watch this, it was my Charlton Heston memorial night film, as he usually mentioned this as his favorite film role. One of my favorite westerns now, very well done.
Act of Violence
Persepolis- theater - This should have won the Oscar. Simple, yet effective, story telling. A cartoon for grown ups. Nice to see the comic book get a broader audience.
Anna Christie - My first Garbo film.
ATL - was surprised at how much I enjoyed this.
Best in Show
All Quiet on the Western Front (1979)
Big Top Pee Wee
Easy Virtue
Bad Boys
Black Sunday
American Psycho
Big Trouble in Little China
All the Right Moves - Gets a plus for Lea Thompson.
Big Jake
Batman: The Movie
The Aviator
The Boston Strangler - Great performance from Tony Curtis. A shame they completely changed the facts of the story though.
French Connection II
Bee Movie
The Atomic Submarine
Bambi II - Kind of interesting how it just filled in the gap in the original.
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
The Abominable Dr. Phibes
Audrey Rose
Darkness Falls
Hard Candy
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - Slightly fun in a campy way, but not as good as I expected.
Terror Train
Aliens vs Predator: Requiem - theater - Five minutes in I thought the franchises were saved, but they quickly destroyed them again.
Basket Case - Slightly interesting concept, but the execution left me wanting.
The Big Hit - Awful.
The Hills Have Eyes 2 - Who green lit this?

(Loved It)
The Bank Job -I think that this was one of the best caper movies I have seen in a very long time. It was ingrossing, terrifcly acted and well directed.
(Really Liked It)
Cloverfield...first movie of the year. Very effective, but not having bookends to the movie I felt let it down somewhat. 4.5 stars
(Liked It)
There Will Be Blood.....A lot to like here, and a brilliant but uneven performance by Daniel Day Lewis, but ultimately the movie seemed kind of pointless. Great style, but not a huge bunch of substance. And it really dragged after a while. My least favorite of the Oscar noms.

Theatrical releases:

Juno - What an annoying film. Diablo Cody should have stuck to stripping. Full of quirky, saracastic dialogue that most high schoolers aren't even capable of. There were some good moments, but not enough to make a good film. 4/10.

Cloverfield - Great film with a unique concept. I saw it on an IMAX screen a little too close, so I don't think I got the experience I wanted out of it. I'll see it again sitting FAR back to fully digest the entire thing. As a lifelong monster movie nut, this was well done and a lot of fun. Even though the monster design wasn't as iconic as I had hoped, it looked very cool in a Lovecraftian kind of way and it caused major havoc. 10/10.

Rambo - Stallone is back, kicking an unholy amount of ass and reminding us why we loved the action flicks of the 80's. This is one of the most brutal films I have ever seen and I fucking loved it. I wouldn't change a single frame of the film. The testosterone is so thick in the theater air you come out dripping wet from it. I need to see it again because it rocks that much. 9/10.

Spiral - The latest film from Hatchet director Adam Green sees Joel Moore (J.P. from Grandma's Boy) as a troubled insurance salesman with some demons in his past continually haunting him. He meets Amber (Amber Tamblyn) and begins a relationship when he begins to paint her portraits. Things begin to unravel in his mind and he has to question what is real and what isn't. This wasn't a terrible movie, but it does move VERY slow and there is little in the way of payoff, though that isn't the point. The script was barely engaging enough to keep me focused, but this would have been better suited for the Masters of Horror series. 5/10.

There Will Be Blood - What a fantastic film. Actually, a phenomenal performance, from Daniel Day Lewis, since he is the focal point of the story. I thought this was about him attempting to get land from a preacher that wouldn't sell, but I had no idea it was more the life story of a man who hit it big in oil and kept rising up while keeping those around him down. Day Lewis is a monster in this role. He doesn't just play Plainview, he is Plainview. Anderson continues to prove why he's one of the best director's working today. 10/10.

George A. Romero's Diary Of The Dead - I really wanted to love this movie, but the script, coupled with the horrendous acting, caused this film to chug along slower than the re-animated corpses it showcased. The usually sublime social commentary in his "Dead" films has been replaced with a ham-fisted approach that is about as subtle as a kick to the groin. I was very disappointed. 6/10.

Funny Games U.S. - An unnecessary remake of Haneke's fantastic German film, done shot for shot by the director himself. I might have enjoyed this more had the original not existed, but this version didn't change anything except for the actors and spoken language. The highlight, by far, was watching Naomi Watts tied up and gagged for an hour. 7/10.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Very funny comedy from the Apatow camp. Jason Segel does a commendable job playing the sad sack trying to get on with his life after a crushing break-up. Great supporting cast and lots of funny gags. 8/10.

Iron Man - Robert Downey Jr. gives a career-defining performance as Tony Stark, eccentric billionaire by day, Iron Man by night. The script was well-written, but some of the supporting players were slightly under-developed. Still, a great film with some amazing CG work. 9/10.

Indiana Jones and the KotCS - It's big and fun, but certain elements of the film kept me from loving it. The plot is too out there for an Indy film, and I don't like the CG work, but I still enjoyed myself and that's what matters most. I just hope this is the last one. 8/10.

The Incredible Hulk - Better than Lee's 2003 version, I liked this Hulk film... I just wish the CG was better. The story felt too short in parts. This felt like a truncated epic, but what did make it to the screen was largely enjoyable. Some hammy dialogue and bad scripting aside I liked a lot about it. 7/10.

Hancock - What started off as a hilarious black comedy turned into a paint-by-numbers Hollywood cliche-fest during the 2nd half. I really wish they'd stuck with the initial premise and not given in to audience expectations. Still, what did end up on screen is a lot of fun. 7/10.

The Happening - Boring, uninspired and pedestrian are the only words that come to mind to describe this crap. M. Night should be stoned in public for churning out this insipid film. No tension and a complete lack of suspense made me bored beyond words, but at least there is some good cinematography on hand. 5/10.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Awesome follow-up to a great film, Hellboy II is a complex and deeply rich fantasy epic that creates a universe steeped in folklore and unique creatures. Perlman is his usual badass self, and del Toro continues to prove he's the most imaginative director working today. My only complaint: I wish it was longer. 9/10.

The Dark Knight - Nolan manages to top his fantastic Batman Begins with this follow-up starring Heath Ledger is a career-defining performance as The Joker. Bale returns as Batman, who is struggling to keep from crossing the line into vigilante territory. Easily the best superhero film ever. 10/10.

Step Brothers - Will Ferrell's latest film that isn't funny. Sure, there are some amusing moments sprinkled throughout, like any comedy, but this one just seemed slapdash and too forced. I wish it were better. 6/10.

Pineapple Express - Easily the funniest film I've seen this year so far. Rogen and Franco are hilarious as a stoner duo on the run from a local drug kingpin after witnessing a murder. Lots of great supporting chracters and a great soundtrack. 9/10.

You Don't Mess With the Zohan - Amusing yet moronically stupid film stars Adam Sandler as an Israeli counter-terrorist who fakes his own death and flees to America to become a hairdresser. Most of it is as bad as you can imagine. There are some good laughs, but it's mostly cliched. 6/10.

Tropic Thunder - A group of actors become unwilling participants in a heroin trade war when the film they're shooting lands them in enemy territory. Very funny film with lots of great gags. Downey Jr. is the highlight here. 8/10.

Mirrors - Creepy remake from Alexandre Aja has Kiefer Sutherland playing a security guard who sees visions in the mirrors around the dept. store he's working in. They cause lots of death and he tries to figure out how to stop them. The script could use some work, but it looks beautiful and there is some good gore involved. 6/10.

Appaloosa - Very different kind of western starring Ed Harris as a stubborn town sheriff who tends to abuse the power he is given. Viggo Mortensen plays his vigilant sidekick and Renee Zellweger sucks as always. Good, yet interesting film. 8/10.

Trick 'r Treat - Mike Dougherty's Halloween anthology film is a near-flawless piece of horror cinema. Great casting, inventive, original tales and some great FX work make this a must-see. How WB can still keep this one out of theaters is beyond me. 10/10.

DVD/HD/Revival (first time viewings):

Ocean's Thirteen (HD) - Better than 12, but not as good as 11. It felt flat and not nearly as cool as the first film. 7/10.

Deadly Blessing (R2 DVD) - Creepy cult flick with the always enjoyable Ernest Borgnine as a brimstone-spewing hittite. 7/10.

My Bodyguard (DVD) - Heart-warming story about a bullied kid who pays a bigger kid to be his bodyguard. Great little flick. 9/10.

3:10 To Yuma (DVD) - Great western. Bale continues to prove he is one of the greatest actors working today. Crowe gives an equally amazing performance. 9/10.

Vanishing Point (1971) (DVD) - An amazing film about a man driving from Denver to California to deliver a car, all on a bet. His detachment from society and unwillingness to conform to societal norms make him a rebel with a cause. Absolutely fantastic film. 10/10.

King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters (DVD) - Great little doc featuring the "guy you love to root for" going up against the headgeek-cliched "guy you love to hate". The ending could have been a bit stronger, but this was a really fun film. 8/10.

20 Million Miles To Earth (DVD) - How did I go so long without seeing this? Great monster flick with amazing effects (as usual) from Ray Harryhausen. The creature is one of the coolest designs from that era of filmmaking. 8/10.

Dogora (DVD) - VERY odd Japanese quasi-monster flick, mostly a film about thieves trying to steal diamonds, with some large mutated space-jellyfish things eating mass amounts of carbon and causing havoc on land. Bizarre but enjoyable. 7/10.

The Island (1980) (Laserdisc) - Very cool flick starring Michael Caine as a reporter who stumbles across an island where pirates are still very much a reality. He is taken hostage and made to mate with the one decent looking woman while his son becomes a member of the tribe. Great cast, great script and a great score courtesy of Morricone. 8/10.

Cool As Ice (Midnight screening) - This really is as awesomely bad as people think and know it is. Vanilla Ice spouts off horrendously cheesy one-liners. The script.... well, it's hard to tell there even was one. The acting makes Troma films look like Oscar contenders. Ice's musical numbers and dialogue had the audience rolling on the flor the entire time. Only worth seeing if you can do so with a drunken midnight crowd in L.A. 2/10.

Godzilla-Mothra-King Ghidorah: All Monsters All-Out Attack (DVD) - Great new Godzilla flick. I'm glad they took Godzilla back to his evil roots. He looks like a demon in this one. Great supporting cast of monsters, too. Nice to see Baragon get some love. The suits looked great and the score was quite fitting, electronic as it was. A real great, dark Big G flick. 9/10.

Confessions of a Superhero (DVD) - Pretty sad doc about the people who dress up as superheroes in front on the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Superman is a delusional ex-meth user, Batman is a psychotic who spews lies, Wonder Woman is actually pretty hot and the (black) Incredible Hulk was formerly homeless and is now getting bit parts in low-budget flicks. A good watch, if only to remind yourself how you don't want to end up in life. 7/10.

The Stone Killer (DVD-R) - Pretty cool Bronson flick has him playing a tough detective from NY, now in LA, trying to find out who's behind the killing of mafia members. Has a good supporting cast and Bronson, as usual, is tough as a coffin nail dispatching bad guys left and right. I hope this one gets a DVD release soon. 8/10.

The White Buffalo (DVD-R) - I remember watching this as a kid a ton of times but I didn't recall my favorite actor, Charles Bronson, being the star! This was a cool flick with Bronson starring as Wild Bill Hickock and the Indian from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as Crazy Horse. The white buffalo itself is a little limited in it's movement, since it's animatronic, but it's pretty cool for the time period. This was a fun film to watch again. 7/10.

Blue Thunder (DVD) - Really cool flick about a police helicopter pilot (Roy Schieder) who gets caught up in a military conspiracy involving a riot-controlling super-helicopter. Great performances from Schieder, Warren Oates and Malcolm McDowell. Some great action and cool flying chases. 8/10.

The French Connection (DVD) - I had seen this movie so long ago I didn't even remember anything, so I consider this my first real viewing. Excellent cop drama with a killer cast and superb direction from Friedkin. Hackman is a force of nature as Doyle and Scheider is the perfect ying to his yang. Everything here feels real and natural. No buddy cop bullshit that people are accustomed to, just a great film about 2 cops with a hunch. 9/10.

The Last American Virgin (DVD) - Cool little 80's cheese-fest about a group of friends going through the trials and tribulations of high school and trying to lose their virginity. Story takes some unexpected turns and has one of the most downer endings of any 80's comedy I can recall. 7/10.

Revenge: Director's Cut (DVD) - Pretty good Tony Scott flick with Kevin Costner getting revenge on Tony Quinn after screwing his wife behind his back. This is actually less about revenge than it is about reuniting with the woman he loves, but it's still pretty cool. I would have liked it more if there was more revenge going on, though. I never saw the original cut, but from what I hear this one is much tighter. 7/10.

Mother's Day (Screening) - Really cool 80's backwoods slasher flick from Troma. Great characters and some really fucked up stuff, as you would expect from Troma. Directed by Lloyd's brother Charles, this is one of the better early 80's slasher flicks. 8/10.

Snake Woman's Curse (DVD) - Creepy psychological Japanese horror flick about a family that is treated poorly by their farming landlord and each one is eventually killed under mysterious circumstances. They each come back and haunt their respective killers, causing them to go mad in the process. Directed by Japanese horror legend Nobuo Nakagawa, this is a very atmospheric and spooky ghost film made long before the boom of J-horror flicks. 8/10.

Bachelor Party (Screening) - Don't even ask. I don't know how I went so long without seeing this one, but it's a riot. Awesome Tom Hanks flick, this is 80's comedy at it's finest. I saw it on a double bill with Caddyshack and the audience ate it up. Hilarious. 9/10.

The Duellists (DVD) - Great debut film from Ridley Scott starring Harvey Kietel and Robert Carradine as two soldiers who continually duel with one another over the course of 30 years. Very intense fighting and beautifully shot European countryside shots make this a fantastic film. 9/10.

The House On Haunted Hill (DVD) - Fun Vincent Price flick from the 50's that employs typical William Castle gags. The film is less about a haunting and more about a scheming wife trying to get rid of her husband. Still, it was a fun view and Price is always a joy to watch. 7/10.

Zapped! - Great comedy remake of Carrie featuring The Baio using his telekinetic powers to rip off girl's shirts and humiliated bullies. Great 80's cheese at it's finest. 7/10.

Assassination - Fairly weak Bronson action vehicle has him starring as a Secret Service agent protecting the First Lady, who is a total bitch. Light on kills and action, heavy on awkward situations and Jill Ireland being a ****. 6/10.

Bay Of Blood - Awesome slasher flick from Italian legend Mario Bava. Loads of gore involved with plenty of nudity and back-stabbing. Easily one of the best films I've seen from the maestro. 9/10.

Them - Very creepy French thriller/horror flick about a couple terrorized in their countryside home at night by unseen invaders. It's intense and tight at only 77 minutes in length. 9/10.

The Doctor And The Devils - A notable doctor is madly trying to advance the field of biology and medical research, but he needs more corpses than the hangman provides. Two street rats decide to start killing fellow bums to collect the body fee and provide fresh corpses. Very cool flick starring ex-007 Timothy Dalton as the doctor. 8/10.

Touch Of Evil - In remembrance of Chuck I watched this classic noir. I really enjoyed the film a lot, but I think it requires a second viewing to really piece together all of the puzzle. Still, amazing performances all around and a dizzying plot with plenty of twists. 8/10.

The Searchers - Fantastic John Wayne/John Ford western has The Duke hunting down the Indian tribe that murdered his brother's family and kidnapped his niece. An epic, sprawling tale that is one of the best classic westerns ever made. 10/10.

Sweeney Todd - I'm not typically a big musical fan, but this was one major exception to that rule. I think this is one of the best films Burton has done. The music was good and not at all distracting, and the gore was so outlandishly over the top - I loved it. 9/10.

Hollywood Boulevard (Screening) - Made in 10 days using footage from 12 Roger Corman productions, Joe Dante and Allan Arkush made this film about a young actress trying to make it in Hollywood. Completely over the top and full of random bits, it's a wild tongue in cheeck ride. 7/10.

Truck Turner (Screening) - Possibly the coolest blaxsploitation film aside from Shaft, Truck Turner features Isaac Hayes kicking major ass against a group of pimps bent on revenge after Truck kills one of their own. 8/10.

The Seven-Ups - Great cop thriller starring Roy Scheider as the leader of a group of cops who go after guys looking at "7 years and up", hence The Seven-Ups. Very similar in look and feel to The French Connection, probably due to the fact that both were produced by the same guy. 8/10.

The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin - Gordon Liu trains like a motherfucker to get revenge on a group of military leaders responsible for killing his father and schoolmates. One of the most legendary kung-fu films of all time. Fantastic fights scenes and sweet revenge. 9/10.

The Curse - A meteor hits a small farm and releases some ooze that causes the people and animals on the farm to turn into monsters. A total 80's cheese-fest, this is a film that could be a prime candidate for a remake. It was decent, but the plot could be realized in a much better film. 6/10.

Pale Rider - Excellent Eastwood western stars Clint as a stranger that comes into a mining town to help out the local miners that are in danger of being run out of their community by a local tyrant. Great film with a supernatural twist. 9/10.

The Hazing - A couple college kids decide to pledge a frat and during the hazing one of them dies. They attempt to cover up the death, but things aren't going as easy as they'd hoped. More of a black comedy than a horror film. 5/10.

The Big Picture - Hilarious satire of moviemaking, courtesy of Christopher Guest. Kevin Bacon plays a screenwriter that's hot, then not, and then hot again. Lots of great co-stars, plus the usual Guest players. 8/10.

Inside - Gory French flick about a pregnant woman who is stalked, assaulted and tortured by a mysterious woman. Good for the first 3/4th's, but the ending blows it. Gratuitously gory, which I usually love - when it has a point. 8/10.

Frontier(s) - Fairly by-the-numbers French gore flick that is a thinly-veiled remake of Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I had read it was intense and gory, which it was, but after viewing Inside it just didn't have the same impact. 7/10.

Sicko - Great documentary by Michael Moore about the pathetic state of American health care. It's sad to see how well other countries take care of their citizens, and how poorly we do it in the U.S. 8/10.

The Mosquito Coast - Harrison Ford plays a brilliant but insane inventor that moves his family down to South America to escape the trappings of American life. While down there he discovers that life can't be as simple as he wants to make it, and that he isn't God. 8/10.

Electra Glide In Blue - Awesomely bizarre film starring Robert Blake as a motorcycle cop that yearns to play with the big boys in homicide. He finds things aren't as glamorous as he had hoped and ends up back on the beat, trying to find meaning in his life. Great 70's film. 9/10.

Sunshine - Good sci-fi flick about a crew sent to re-ignite the Sun. They run into the previous ship sent out and encounter some major problems. It was good for the first 2/3rd's, but the last 1/3 turned into a quasi-slasher flick that only dragged down the film's quality. 8/10.

Otis - Pretty good horror/black comedy about a fat loser who kidnaps girls and calls them "Kim", all in an effort to relive his high school days, this time as a popular jock. It's very dark but also very funny. 7/10.

Macon County Line - Great 70's flick about a couple of guys out wreaking havoc before joinning the Army. They run afoul of a local cop whose wife is killed by a couple drifters but the cop blames them and looks for revenge. 8/10.

Bohachi Bushido: Code of the Forgotten Eight - Pretty hardcore 70's pinky violence film from notorious director Teruo Ishii. This one was a little too heavy on the soft-core action and a little light on story. Still, it is extremely gory with loads of graphic nudity. Great addition for fans of the genre. 7/10.

Bob Le Flambeur - Excellent film by Jean-Pierre Melville about an aging gangster looking for one last big score. Fantastic writing, acting and direction across the board. Melville's films are exceptional and a treat to watch. This was no exception. 9/10.

Leviathan - Underwater monster flick about a mining crew terrorized by a mutated crew member infected with something from a sunken Russian ship. It's kind of like The Thing underwater, just not nearly as good. 7/10.

[REC] - Finally caught this Spanish import about a news crew that follows a group of firemen to a call where an old woman turns out to be a zombie. Everyone is quarantined inside the building by the police and people are starting to turn. First half is kinda boring, but the second half picks things up nicely. 7/10.

Mother of Tears - Argento completes his "Mother" trilogy with this muddled mess of a film. The acting is bad and the storyline is barely there, but, being an Argento film, there is gore aplenty. Pretty weak effort, but there are some fun scenes. 5/10.

Winter Kills - Very black comedy loosely based on the assassination of JFK. Jeff Bridges plays the brother of an assassinated president who goes on a mission to confirm the identity of a second gunman who made a deathbed confession. The film is a bit disjointed, due to the high number of guest stars, but it is wholly enjoyable. 8/10.

Baby Blood - French horror flick form the 80's about a woman who gest impregnated by an ancient creature. The fetus talks to her and threatens to kill her unless she feeds it fresh blood. The concept is interesting, but the execution could have used some work. 6/10.

Starship Troopers 3: Marauder - Much better sequel than part 2. Van Dien is back doing to only role he can't fuck up. Nice to see the Federation commercials make a return. Bad, but a lot of fun. 7/10.

Rescue Dawn Fantastic Werner Herzog film about Dieter Dengler getting shot down over Laos. Christian Bale is awesome and Steve Zahn gives a great supporting turn. Very inspirational film. 9/10.

Mission: Impossible III - Great action flick by J.J. Abrams. Cruise is good and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is an amazing villain. Lots of great suspense and very engaging. Best of the series. 8/10.

The Inglorious Bastards - Great WWII B-film by Enzo Castellari features Bo Svenson, Fred Williamson and several convicts who escape execution only to find themselves unwittingly volunteering for a suicide mission against the Germans. Great fun and full of action. 9/10.

Aguirre, The Wrath of God - Werner Herzog's film about Spanish conquistadors looking for the golden city of El Dorado in 1561. Klaus Kinski plays Aguirre, a ruthless and resilient leader who refuses to give up the search. Very powerful film. 9/10.

Street Law - Hard hitting Italian crime film by Enzo Castellari starring Franco Nero as the victim of a brutal beating. When the police do nothing to help him he decides to take the law into his own hands. Good story and lots of good action. Nero's Death Wish. 8/10.

The Vanishing - Subtle yet hard-hitting film about a couple on a road trip. When they stop at a gas station the gf goes missing and her bf spends the next 3 years looking for her. The kidnapper shows up and promises to tell him everything, if he agrees to one rule. Excellent film with a smart script and fantastic performances. 10/10.

Rogue - By-the-numbers croc flick by Wolf Creek's Greg McLean. It's not terrible, but there's zero originality. Plus, it's not nearly as fun as Lake Placid. More like Lake Flaccid. 6/10.

Resident Evil: Extinction - Good post-apocalyptic film as well as being a good zombie flick, RE3 is the best of the thus-far mediocre series. It's over the top, as usual, but there are many unexpected twists throughout the film. Lots of fun. 7/10.

Mean Girls - Funny high school satire reminiscent of Heathers has Lindsay Lohan doing a good job of inflitrating a group of popular girls in order to ruin them. Well-written by Tina Fey. 7/10.

Lyckantropen - Subtle short film about a family in turmoil and the secret a man possesses. Very well shot and almost Lynchian. Wonderful soundtrack by Ulver. 8/10.

The Mechanic - I had watched this film before, but I wasn't in the right mindset to properly enjoy it. This is a fantastic Bronson film with a slow burn that isn't his norm. Jan Michael Vincent is great as his protege, learning to become a trained hitman like Bronson. 9/10.

Little Darlings (screening) - Fun teen comedy/drama about two girls at summer camp who make a bet to see who can lose their virginity first. Pretty fun flick even though it does lag in some parts. 7/10.

The Hound of the Baskervilles - Peter Cushing stars as Sherlock Holmes in this Hammer flick about a cursed family being whose members are being killed by a mysterious hound. Christopher Lee plays the last remaining heir to the manor, and it's up to Holmes and Watson to protect him. Great performances all around. 8/10.

Starman - I can't believe it took me so long to finally see this Carpenter film. Great story about an alien that assumes the identity of a woman's dead husband after arriving on Earth. Touching story. Bridges is excellent. 8/10.

The Ruins (unrated) - Decent horror flick about a group of 20-somethings that go into the jungles to check out an ancient temple. It's teeming with man-eating plants. They die. Ok flick, but kinda boring. 6/10.

Heckler - Jamie Kennedy's doc on people who heckle stand-up comics. Starts off funny but slowly goes downhill. At a scant 78 min it still feels too long. 5/10.

Smokin' Aces - Decent Tarantino-esque flick about a bunch opf assassins all convening in Lake Tahoe to try to collect a bounty on Buddy "Aces" Israel's head. Amusing for the most part but the ending was a kinda weak. 7/10.

The Quiet Man - Great John Wayne/John Ford film has The Duke as a former US boxer who returns to his birthplace in Ireland to claim his land. He falls for a local woman and has a rivalry with her brother. Great cast and wonderful performances. 9/10.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - Abysmally unfunny film from the Apatow camp. I know it's supposed to be a parody on musician bio-pics, but this was plain bad. Everything was flat. 4/10.

Over the Top - Awesomely cheesy arm wrestling (!) flick starring Stallone as a runaway father trying to make up for lost time with his son. Great film to watch with the right kind of audience... one that laughs at everything. Not a terrible flick, but not so great, either. 6/10.

Savage Streets - Linda Blair goes Bronson on a group of punks who rape her deaf sister and kill her best friend. Even though most of the action takes place at the end this is a still a fun film. Great with the right crowd. 8/10.

Damien: The Omen 2 - Pretty good sequel to the fantastic original, this one has Damien learning of his purpose on Earth and accepting his fate. Not terribly exciting, there are still some good performances (and kills) that keep the film afloat. 7/10.

The Omen III: The Final Conflict - Damien Thorn is now grown up and has taken over the role of ambassador to Britain. A cosmic alignment has given re-birth to Jesus and Damien needs to kill the child in orer to attain his place in the world. Pretty boring, not a lot to love here. Sam Neill is at least good. 5/10.

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer - Even though there's more set-up than slaying here, this is still a fairly fun flick. Could have been heavier on the monsters, though. 6/10.

Burnt Offerings - Pretty boring Shining-esque horror flick about a haunted house that isn't really all that haunted. Reed gives a decent performance, but the film lacks any real suspense. 5/10.

Paths of Glory - Fantastic early Kubrick anti-war film stars Kirk Douglas as a Colonel defending 3 men on charges of cowardice. Excellently shot and with a superb cast. 9/10.

I've always loved prohibition era crime movies and this Coen brothers' effort was excellent. I loved the language and look of everything.
The Proposition 1/11/2008--DVD
The three leads in this (Guy Pearce, Danny Huston, and Ray Winstone) all give fantastic, imminently watchable performances. The direction and story they are given is equally tremendous. I just wish the disc I got from Netflix wasn't so fucked up in the last act.
Eastern Promises 1/16/2008--DVD
A great mobster flick with some real out of nowhere scenes (you know Cronenbergs usual nuttiness). Viggo gives a great performance and certainly deserves his Oscar nomination.
Castle in the Sky 1/21/2008--DVD
Another Miyazaki classic. I really love the worlds he and his studio create. Each of them feels like a truly living world and the story accompanying this one is immense and breathtaking.

Live Free or Die Hard 1/4/2008--DVD
Not nearly as entertaining as the previous Die Hards but still enjoyable. It's time for Bruce Willis to retire the character I think. Fun action, blah story.
Lords of Dogtown 1/12/2008--DVD
An entertaining take on the origins of modern skateboarding. I just didn't find the leads very likeable and the beginning started things off too slowly.
3:10 to Yuma 1/17/2008--DVD
A fine entertaining chase flick. Solid performances were slightly marred by questionable motives by some of the characters and an ending that makes everything feel somewhat pointless.
27 Dresses 1/20/2008--Theatre
An enjoyable rom-com. Kind of boring and cliché but in the ended endearing and sweet.
Porco Rosso 1/23/2008--DVD
I've always loved the idea of sky pirates and sea planes and pretty much everything about the world created in this movie. I even loved the movie itself, with its chases and fights and love connections. This would have ranked much higher were it not for it's tacked on voice-over ending. Just lazy film-making right there.
Eagle vs Shark 2/3/2008--DVD
This is essentially New Zealand's version of Napoleon Dynamite.... only better. Funny and weird in spurts. The thing that most stood out for me was the absolutely gorgeous locales where this was filmed. New Zealand just shot up to my most wanted vacation spot.

Gotta say, this was a pretty big disappointment. Much of the humor just missed for me. It's a shame.
Mr. Woodcock 1/17/2008--DVD
Not much to say about this one. A pretty blah, unfunny comedy. Only really funny part was Billy Bob's stretcher flipping over.
