Early Xmas present (or not), depending on whether you're (a) a fan of Berg and (b) think "Dune" can fit into cinematic form.

Eh, I don't know about this. I've come more and more to the conclusion that this is one book that just doesn't translate well to film.

I've never found Lynch's version to be penetrable but I dug the sci fi channel miniseries aside from the costumes (enjoyed it more on the unrated dvd).

The sci-fi channel version was okay, but made unnecessary changes to the plot (Irulan meets Paul prior to the Harkonnen invasion? Bah!), and overall felt more cheesy than anything.

Peter Berg is like Brett Ratner he makes movies that don't bomb. That's about all I can say.

I would love for them to do this right...don't know if that is possible though.

Meh. Same deal with The Golden Compass. The director won't be able to handle the material.

Same here, after the Kingdom (which I thought was good) you would think he would continue to pick better material.

Oh, Alan Smithee may just direct this one in the end, too. ;)

Can't be any worse than the original. Then again, it wont necessarily be any better... :shrug:

Looking forward to the cast of Friday Night Lights taking on Dune. It could work... :D

:lol: This is going to be an unmitigated disaster. Berg is truly a hack. At least the Lynch version, however bad, contained his unique visualization.

I've got doubts just because of the sheer immensity of the book. Will Berg use the shakey-cam for Dune? And the blue eye effects will be interesting. I liked the way they looked in the Children of Dune miniseries, even if they weren't accurate.

A film adaptation of Dune depends highly on the style of it. Even at 3 hours long, the story will be all messed around. I do really like Lynch's version(s) because it had a vision. It's atleast nice to look at. I'm not sure if Berg will have that.

hmmm... will this be fall 2009ish?

Pierre Morel to direct 'Dune'

Pierre Morel has signed a deal to direct “Dune,” Paramount’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel.

Kevin Misher is producing the adaptation, which he set up at Paramount back in May 2008 after a year of pursuing the rights from Herbert’s estate.

Pete Berg was attached to helm but left the director’s chair to take command of “Battleship” for Universal, for whom he will also make “Lone Survivor.”

Herbert’s “Dune” was an epic futuristic tale set on a desert planet named Arrakis, which produces a spice called Melange, a source for space travel. The book, which explored the many fiefdoms and families vying for control of the natural resource, became a best-seller and an awards-winner in 1965 and helped launched a series that his son Brian Herbert along with author Kevin J. Anderson continued after Herbert’s death in 1986.

David Lynch helmed a previous adaptation, which was released by Universal in 1984. The movie didn't find success on the domestic front, neither critically nor financially, though was well-received abroad.

Paramount is undertaking a search for a writer to pen the new adaptation.

Morel, who has several projects in development around town since the release of his hit “Taken,” is repped by WME Entertainment.

Chase Palmer to work on script for helmer Pierre Morel

Chase Palmer has been hired to work on the "Dune" script for director Pierre Morel at Paramount.

Morel came aboard the project at the beginning of the year, and Palmer will work Morel's ideas into original scribe Josh Zetumer's screenplay. The "From Paris With Love" and "Taken" helmer is intent on hewing close to the source material, Frank Herbert's classic 1965 sci-fi tome.

David Lynch adapted the first novel into a feature for Universal in 1984.

Kevin Misher and Richard Rubinstein are producing the new Paramount version, which they hope will spark a franchise.

Repped by WME and the Gotham Group, Palmer is developing his original screenplays "Number Thirteen," with producer Gail Mutrux at Pretty Pictures, and "Wild Wild East," with producer Paul Schiff. He would direct both as well.

Palmer also has worked on the screenplays for "No Blood, No Guts, No Glory" for Misher at Paramount and "The Dallas Buyer's Club" at Universal.

The story of Dune can't be told in a single movie. Maybe if they shot it all at once and split it into two or three movies, but otherwise... don't bother.
