Dune (2021, D: Villeneuve) - News, Rumors, Etc

To me, it sounds like Part II is a sure thing. I don’t think they’d release it with a title card saying Part I if they weren’t committed. Plus you have the show on Max that is in the works. They must view it as a viable IP.

It sounds like an announcement will probably happen next week or something.
“Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that,” WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff told Deadline yesterday in a sit-down chat regarding the conglom’s full support of Dune 2.
In regards to proceeding with sequels to this year’s theatrical HBO Max slate, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar says the studio’s “decisions are well informed and based on audience response, not just based on box office.”

Interesting that they're looking at "audience response" instead of just box-office. They seem concerned the viewer numbers alone won't accurately show whether people will pony up to watch a sequel.

That is what makes he hesitant to see it. Not knowing if there will be a conclusion or not.
Either way I was not going to see it in the theater anyway. It would be an eventual rental.

So there is no Padishah Emperor in this right? I can't find anything.

Hope it's true. Part of me thinks that even though they have said this will be judged on how it moves the streaming needle, they are still waiting to see who went and saw it in theaters.

$17.5m opening day (with Thursday previews) , biggest for HBOMax co- release, expected $33m to $40m weekend, also highest for the configuration. A- cinemascore is also solid.

I don't know if Blade Runner 2049 scored that well with audiences or not. IMO, this movie was way more accessible to the general public. The Warner CEO said she was all about audience reaction, so hopefully she meant what she said. Any way to measure how it's doing on streaming?

Blade Runner 2049 got an A- as well.
Keep in mind CinemaScore is an exit poll, meaning they're asking as people are leaving a screening of it. So it's a good indicator of how well the people that went to see it liked it, but it doesn't really indicate how much of the general population is even interested in seeing the film. I don't know of any corresponding metric to track the amount of "buzz" a film has. A good CinemaScore should indicate good word-of-mouth though, which may help its second weekend, or streaming numbers.

The BO numbers are very good, IMO. Way more than I thought it would’ve done.

One can look that up on CinemaScore's site:

Like I said in another thread, if they really want to help the numbers, they should announce the sequel. I think people who saw liked it but felt short changed that it was only half a story may be more likely to recommend and give it repeat viewings if they knew the rest of the story was on the way. Myself included.

This pulled 1.9m viewers on HBO Max for the weekend per samba. There is no direct comparison for Kong vs. Godzilla (3.6m) since that was a Wednesday - Sunday period of time (1.7m on Fri - Sun)
That places it well below Mortal Kombat and Suicide Squad, a little under WW84 and Space Jam, and well above Many Saints of Newark, Those Who Wish Me Dead, Malignant, and a little above Zack Snyder's Justice League.
R-rated movies seem to do better on streaming than theaters, which I guess isn't a big surprise.

Re: Dune (2021, D: Villeneuve) - News, Rumors, Etc
I recall watching my first R rated film around 12-13 because my parents were out for the night, and HBO had Die Hard on. When I got a bit older, I could rent R-rated movies from Blockbuster because my parents allowed it. Seeing them in theaters was trickier though, since I had to get a parent to actually buy the ticket. It wasn't that I was going behind their back with home viewings, but it was more of a hassle to get a parent to actually go in and get us tickets instead of just dropping us off, or having my older sister drop us off and pick us up.
I don't know how diligent theaters are about carding kids still. I haven't been carded in decades.

Old School in how the screenplay was written. Lots of screenwriters also use a simple pad of paper and a pen.
