Box office Mojo is now reporting I am Legend made $29.5 million yesterday. A bit more than the $28,350,000 originally predicted. SO, this actually could have a chance to make near $80 million this week. This means more, more , more remakes of course.
Also, it looks like Golden Compass will only make around $10 million in it's 2nd week bringing it's U.S. total to only a little over $40 million

At the theater I went to, they had someone dressed up in an Alvin costume standing outside of the door to the theater to greet kids as they went to find their seats, and instead of doing that, he stood very still and then jumped at people and made them scream. It was rather creepy.

I skipped the wide releases and saw Juno this weekend. It was a really cute movie that I'd highly recommend.

I think it means more and more Will Smith.

Surprised (and disgusted) about Alvin as well.

TGC is pretty weak here but it should survive, despite selling overseas rights, New Line still must be getting a decent cut there.

Also wondering if the Kite Runner movie will do well.

The I Am Legend big opening is probably good news for Fox and their AVPR movie now that it is clear people are still going to theaters.

It's still a great premises.
Or the Omega Man/Last Man on Earth it's been done factor.

I think the word of mouth on "I am Legend" won't be great, simple middlin' to average. But I do think the word of mouth on "Alvin and the Chipmunks" is going be pretty good (it's much more entertaining that "I am Legend" which I saw on Imax, and IAL produce a lot of yawns from me, while "Alvin and the Chipmunks" cracked me up, even with a fairly simple story, it's all in the execution and the almost seemless integration of live-action with the CGI chipmunks).

It looks like this is going to be his 7th 100 million in a row. Wikipeda says that only Tom Hanks and Cruise are the other 2 to accomplish this. Pretty impressive.

I agree. Would Hitch or The Pursuit of Happyness have done nearly as well with someone else?

After catching I Am Legend, it doesn't really seem like the type of film that would draw 80 million on a weekend, just based on the pace of the film. There's no doubt that someone other then Will Smith stars and this movie only makes 30 mil or less.

Yes. But every movie after that has been over 100 mil.

Men In Black 2
Bad Boys 2
I, Robot
Shark Tale
Hitch
Pursuit of Happyness

And then soon to be I Am Legend.

Alvin and the Chipmunks has made $45 million in its first 3 days. I actually feel kinda suicidal after hearing this.

Hah! Great to see these 2 movies on top and Golden Compass tanking.
I wonder what would happend if Stuttering John got to Nicole Kidman and asked her "so..is it safe to say there will be no Golden Compass 2?".

I remember he asked Billy Crystal "so is it safe to say there won't be a Mr. Saturday Night 2?" that was great.

$76 million for I am Legend and $45 million for Alvin and the Chipmunks according to BoxOfficeMojo.

While I agree Alvin looks like utter shit, I don't care what it made. Gives kids something to see, and keeps them out of the movies I am seeing.

Thank god, it's about time someone took the wind of Billy Crystal and Mr. Saturday Night's sail!

I love the title of this thread.

Nick Martin,
Taste(less? Perhaps since ID4 is one of my all-time favorite movies) Will Smith fan.

Why you say that? I thought the story was interesting and moved along well. The action was good. The film looked terrific. That's about all I can ask for from a movie.
