Most unexpected deaths (spoilers).

In order to minimize spoilerage, I suggest that we put titles without spoilers and then the actual death in spoilers.

The Mummy Returns
Spoiler:
I was not expecting Evy to die. That has shaken me like no other movie death ever has. Then they had to cheapen it by bringing her back to life. I think it would have been more powerful if she had stayed dead. As it is currently written, it was just a cheap scare. But for those 2 minutes when I thought she was dead, I was like wow -eek-

Gimme Shelter
Spoiler:
Meredith Hunter

PopcornTreeCt 12-09-07 12:44 PM

The Departed
Spoiler:
I had never seen Infernal Affairs so when Leo got shot I nearly jumped out of my seat!

The Shining

Spoiler:
Dick Hallorann

valkyrie 12-09-07 01:08 PM

Deep Blue Sea

Spoiler:
Sam Jackson

Enough said. ;)

Stupid Final Destination starting the
Spoiler:
randomly hit by bus/semitruck/car trend, which was copied in many other movies.

Been noticing this alot in TV shows the past couple of seasons. Most notably
Spoiler:
Kate on "NCIS" at the end of season 2
,
Spoiler:
The original President Palmer on "24"
and
Spoiler:
hector on "The Unit"

Course now that I think of movies, I too had not seen Infernal Affairs before The Departed, so that was a bit of a shock.

There's no point in putting things in spoiler tags unless you also give the title.

Serenity.

(1) The Cowboys (1973) - One character dies in a manner and at a time in the story you don't expect. The means of their end is also a surprise.

(2) Psycho (1960) - I had th good fortune to see this film 'cold' (not on original release, TV broadcast many years later) and the death of one major character was one of the big surprises I have had watching a film.

Of all the films I think this has to be at or near the top of the list

Spoiler:
Years ago when I saw it for the first time on cable it made me question if I had really seen what I just saw. I actually wondered if I was missing something for the next few minutes. It wasn't even one of those flesh wound type things; William Peterson got shot in the face. He was dead; the villian was still very much alive, and it wasn't like Pankow had been an equal partner or anything. I've watched the documentary on the DVD, but it's still just hard to imagine that Friedkin got away with it.

Legolas 12-09-07 02:58 PM

Young Guns
Spoiler:
Charlie Sheen is the first to die and we're only an hour into the movie!

To Live and Die in L.A.
Spoiler:
They killed the star and the partner had to finish the movie. And it wasn't like they were 1A and 2A in the movie. The star was A and the partner was a distant B.

End of Days
Spoiler:
Schwarzenegger dies! Never mind that it was a very stupid, last-second plot twist.

Spartan
Spoiler:
Derek Luke getting snipered halfway through the movie.

Executive Decision
Spoiler:
The commercials sort of gave away Steven Seagal's fate. Plus you have to wonder what's going on when his name doesn't even appear during the opening credits.

PopcornTreeCt 12-09-07 02:59 PM

Not the same as a death but for those that saw The Village it was a pretty big shock.
