Bob Morton in Robocop...good guy?

He's the guy who pushed for RoboCop to be on the street, but eventually got killed while doing cocaine. Sure, he was a sleazy dude, but RoboCop walked the streets because of him.

And the actor was in Blank Check, and is George Clooney's cousin.

Would you mess with that?

FinkPish 12-06-07 08:32 PM

Robocop would not be able to compute what the hell is going on in this thread.

DthRdrX 12-06-07 08:33 PM

I think the social commentary of Robocop is that the executives were all bad guys, and only did things for themselves. "Thats life in the big city."

Doughboy 12-06-07 08:47 PM

Bob Morton wasn't a good guy. He wasn't bad either. The guy obviously wasn't working with murderous thugs like Clarence Boddicker or killing fellow execs. I guess a morally ambiguous opportunist is the best way to describe him.

Now Stathis Borans in The Fly. That was a seemingly sleazy fellow who in the end turned out to be a really decent guy.

i always remember him because of Hot Shots 2

I'd buy that for a dollar!

...And the dude had a DVD player in his house in 1987! He's a good guy in my book.

Besides, anyone who snorts cocaine off a hooker's cleavage can't be all bad, right?

I thought he was kind of a prick; he just wasn't murderous like Dick Jones. Then again in a few years Bob Morton probably would have been Dick Jones.

If we're listing pointless sequels that Miguel Ferrer appeared in then put me down for Another Stakeout.

tylergfoster 12-07-07 08:15 AM

He didn't really care when his buddy got killed in the board meeting. Of all the things he does in the movie I'd say that's the purest sign of his character and it's not exactly a winning affirmation of his niceness.

True, and although I admire the foresight of RoboCop on the DVD front, we must take into account that it takes place in the future, and thus Bob is not necessarily a pioneer when it comes to home video technology.

UAIOE 12-07-07 02:22 PM

I guess Bob just doesn't believe that Blu-Ray or HD-DVD are the future...

Mopower 12-07-07 02:29 PM

Aren't we past the year that Robocop takes place in or is that not known for sure?

They never actually gave a year, at least not in the first movie.

Think you're right. I always thought of Bob as a good guy...

Now I don't see why. Lol.

I believe the NES game said it took place in 1990.

I always thought Morton was the man.

And he did indeed care about Kinney getting killed by ED-209 - Morton's the one who yells out "Somebody wanna call a goddamn paramedic? Let's go, Johnson!"

:D

For all his obvious flaws, when he saw RoboCop finished and walking around, you could see the respect and I'd even say love for his creation.

Crossing Jordan. Not a movie sequel, but what I fondly remember him in other than this film.

PopcornTreeCt 12-07-07 08:39 PM

I liked him in Traffic.

I disagree about Bob Morton being a bad guy. I have two reasons:

1. He created RoboCop.
2. Anybody an evil motherfucker like Dick Jones makes sushi out of is a good guy. (Remember what Johnson said.)
-------------------
Slightly off-topic: I just saw RoboCop 2 again for the first time in about 900 centuries, and that movie is like the first one after taking several acid hits. It's nowhere near the first movie, but it borders on the like it/guilty pleasure line. Love Tom Noonan, I find the mean-spiritedness hilarious (the foul-mouthed kid, the whole idea of RoboCop 2), and I think Verhoeven MIGHT have approved of the part where Robo becomes overly PC and nice (his lecture to the evil little league kids is priceless). So yeah, good, but nowhere near great.

Miguel Ferrer is one of my favorite character actors. The guy has an infectious energy and arrogance about him that I love. He owned on Twin Peaks and Bob Morton was one of the best things about RoboCop. Anytime I see he's in something I know it's at least going to be worth watching for his performance.

"What are you waiting for, Christmas? We've got work to do, dammit, they're putting this girl in the ground tomorrow, and we've wasted half the day traveling out here to the middle of nowhere."

I'm not ashamed to say I typed that by heart.

Miguel Ferrer rules. But I think he's got some kind of pulmonary or throat problem; on the new RoboCop DVD you can hear him grunting every time he takes a breath.

bluetoast 12-08-07 10:54 PM

He's featured in the Robocop extras? Shit I haven't even explored those yet.

And I liked him in Traffic as well (and Peter Riegert too). I never did get to find out what that joke Luiz Guzman was telling him before getting interrupted was though...

Nick Martin 12-09-07 12:26 AM

Since Crossing Jordan ended, he's been on the new show Bionic Woman.
