Rudo y Cursi (Carlos Cuarón, 2009) — Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna

News of this movie came from Spanish language sources, so I don't really have any links although I'm sure Google News will have information.

Alfonso Cuarón's younger brother, who co-wrote Y tu mamá también is going to helm this film starring Bernal and Luna (who were the protagonists in Y tu mamá). They play brothers, at least one of which has become a soccer pro. IMDB says the project is in post-production but another article says shooting will start in the spring.

Rudo y Cursi (Cuaron, 2008): Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal

Synopsis:
Two siblings rival each other inside the world of professional soccer.

Spanish language teaser:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jGQFLvzp3GA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jGQFLvzp3GA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Variety review:
Already one of the top five all-time grossers in Mexico, and seemingly a sure thing for Stateside arthouse success, "Rudo y Cursi" reunites "Y tu mama tambien" stars Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal under the direction of "Mama" screenwriter Carlos Cuaron for a rags-to-riches parable powered by football, delirious vulgarity and pure personality.

a bit of it is in the movie I'm assuming, I hope it has a good DVD release.

Here's an actual trailer for it...

I don't need a trailer or even a synopsis. It's one of those damn Cuaron brothers, and Gael Garcia Bernal is in it. It could be a remake of Ishtar and I'd be there.

Not a big fan of Y tu mama tambien, although I love Cuaron's other movies.

We'll see.

The Rudo character seems inspired in Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

It is produced by Alfonso Cuaron though...along with Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. So that's cool too...

Re: Rudo y Cursi (Carlos Cuarón, 2008) — Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna

Saw this last night at the SFIFF.

I really enjoyed it, Diego and Carlos were there for Q&A, Carlos is very funny. Gael was sick, or else passed out at the Twin Peaks bar in the castro, the story kept changing.

It's a pretty simple story, nothing too complex, but it does show you the sides of the mexican dream.
Carlos said that there are 4 choices for a mexican to be successful.

Football
Singing
Cross the border to the US
Drugs.

The film deals somewhat with all 4.. the roles were essentially reversed in how you would think they would play the characters, so each guy plays against type.

The football scenes were well handled, and apparently Carlos got the idea for how to shoot it from watching Funny Games.

And for a Football film, there is not a ton of football, it's really the story of 2 brothers..

Saw it at the dollar show a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed it, as well as the audience I saw it with.

They show you a few scenes with football (highlights) which are well done (if you don't mind a CGI ball).

I liked it. There was something that kept it from making it excellent, but it was very good.

Just saw the cover of the DVD/blu ray...look at Diego Luna's hand...that is fucking awkward.

Yes, I know this should be in the DVD thread but...since it's not out yet..and Amazon has this posted as well. WTF is up with changing Luna's hand? Holding a crouch too vulgar I guess?
