Solid numbers for Beowulf, extremely impressive numbers for No Country for Old Men do well, 148 screens and it opened at #7.

$28 Million seems pretty soft for Beowulf. I know it's not the summer anymore, but they've been hyping this thing for the last six months, it's gotten fairly solid reviews, and they even went PG-13 so they could draw a bigger crowd.

I'm surprised Fred Claus' drop wasn't bigger, since it's a poor movie. I imagine it'll hold up through Christmas though.

Glad to see Bee Movie stay strong too. It's a cute and fun film.

I would have expected 40+ for Beowulf. 28 does seem low.

Actually, I was expecting Beowulf to bomb, so the high number is a pleasant surprise.

I can't wait to see what No Country for Old Men does when it gets a wide release. I just saw it last night, and plan on seeing it again once it comes to a closer theatre.

I thought Beowulf would only make about $15-$18 million so i was pretty surprised to see it make nearly $28 million. It also did about another $17 million in international theaters so it stands at $45 million already.

A bit over 1/3rd of 300's opening weekend is not very good. I think the problem was that the trailer didn't really sell anything except that fact that it's in 3D. People would've lined up around the block even a decade ago but nowadays it's really just a gimmick. It's a bit of a stretch to assume that audiences know what the story of Beowulf is. I don't. :shrug:

Why not? Tons of Holidays where people have time off and not much to see until Christmas. I think it will hold up OK.

I never heard anything about Beowulf being in 3D except for the little note at the end of the trailer. The TV ads tried to convey it but were just poor ads in general.

In fact, of all the people I saw it with, I was the only one that knew it was going to be in 3D.

I didn't know about Beowulf in 3D until I looked at theater listings for showtimes yesterday.

I agree with most people not knowing what Beowulf was about. It's something that most people haven't read since they were in high school, unless they were English majors in colleges or took lit classes too. The 3D gimmick was used just to get people in the theaters.

I think Beowulf will have legs similar to The Polar Express. The 3D in PE was the most amazing I've ever seen, and Beowulf was made by the same people.

Beowulf will not have those kinds of legs. Polar Express had those kind of legs because 1. It was a Christmas film and 2. It was a family (or kid) film.
Beowulf will probably do rather well overseas though so it probably wont have to worry too much about making it's money back.

You may be right on with number 2. I think the reason why Beowulf didn't do better is because there just isn't as big of a market for "adult" animation. The last one I can remember that was hyped was that so-called Final Fantasy movie, and that didn't do well at all.

It could have legs. I didn't mean EXACTLY PE's numbers, obviously.

The low BO could indicate that people are waiting to see it in 3D in the weeks to come. Maybe not.

Part of the problem might be how hyped the 3D is. I don't have access to a 3D theater, and people make it sound like the 2D experience isn't worth the bother.

i think a decade ago, 3d was a crappy gimmick, now the 3D in a good theater kicks ass. The movies I have seen in Digital 3D and IMAX 3-D (minus Meet the Robinsons) have been fantastic.

Beowulf meet most expectations. The visuals are amazing and worth seeing in IMAX-3D, Dan in Real Life is doing pretty good. a drop of only 24%

I'm sure that's a big factor. My father is a huge Lord of the Rings fan who absolutely refused to watch this because it was a "cartoon." It's too bad, really. I thought Zemeckis made another great one. (Especially in 3-D!)

I'm surprised to see "The Game Plan" still hanging in there.

Uh, the most important news in the box office figures is the incredible $20,000 per screen average from No Country for Old Men, playing at a whopping 150 theaters. Nothing but rave reviews. It opens wide next weekend. Along with American Gangster, I believe this one also has a Best Picture nomination locked up.

I wish it had opened wide to begin with, I can't wait to see this movie. I only went and saw Beowulf as a back up because "No Country" wasn't playing.

I think NO Country for Old Men is a lock for a Best Picture Nomination but i really don't see American Gangster getting any nominations except for possibly Best Supporting Actress Nom. for Ruby Dee.
