Charlie Wilson's War - 12/25/2007

HD Trailer here
Tom Hanks ... Charlie Wilson
Julia Roberts ... Joanne Herring
Philip Seymour Hoffman ... Gust Avrokotos
In the beginning I was hesitant on how well the movie was going to be as the book was one of the best books I have read in a long time but after seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman nail Gust Avrokotos I'm pumped to see the movie!

Just came back from a showing tonight. Overall I really enjoyed the movie. It had a lot of humor in it, much more then expected.
Hoffman and Hanks are amazing together.

Charlie Wilson's war is only 95 ish minutes long and after I watched it the first thing I thought was 1. I liked the movie but I should have liked it more. 2. I felt like I just watched a 95 minute version of a 2 hour hour movie. 3. Hanks and espically Hoffman are great in ther roles.

I thought it was slightly above average since it's just a paint-by-the-numbers type of film, and I never really got into any of the characters, and the screenplay left me blase about the whole film. I think it needed a different directorial tone as well, a little less flippancy about the situation (covertly divertly funds to give the Afghans the hardware to stave off the Soviet onslaught into Afghanistan).
I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.

My mom just told me to go see this. She enjoyed it quite a bit, as did my dad. I told her the only reason I have thought about seeing it was because of PSH - she said that he was excellent, but that Hanks was quite good as well.

I went and saw Walk Hard today, probably 5 people besides me and my friend in the theater. Saw Sweeney Todd today, probably 20 people total in the theater. Charlie Wilson's War was PACKED probably 5 open seats left, I'd say that there were only 10 people that were younger than me and my friends combined age. Lots of seniors.

Saw it tonight, really enjoyed it for the most part. I was ROFL at quite a few parts especially
.
There were probably 10 people there with us though, we saw more people walking into Alvin and the Chipmuncks than were in our theater.

The TV spot with Julia Roberts and her ".....Chahlie" line makes me cringe like no other. She can't put on a southern accent to save her life. She is just dreadful.
I'll rent the DVD even though I loathe Hanks recent performances.

Julia's Southern accent is fine. I think being from the South helps.
I liked the movie a lot. I wasn't expecting much, I totally just saw it for the Star Power, but it turned out to be something special.

I went to see this with my Dad on X-mas eve. I really liked it. Sure, it was a bit paint-by-numbers and pedestrian in it's execution, but I really dug the script and the cinematography was excellent. It was a great looking film and Hanks did a wonderful job playing an alkie congressman with a southern swagger. Hoffman stole the show as usual. Is there any role that guy can't make work? Even Roberts didn't bother me, and I'm not usually much of a fan of her work. I'd give it a 9/10.

I thought this movie was pretty good. One of those movies that doesn't have many major flaws so it makes it enjoyable to watch. Hanks does OK portraying someone unlikeable that everyone likes anyways, Roberts is passable but not annoying, and P.S. Hoffman is great. With Sorkin doing the screenplay I couldn't help but notice the "Walk & Talk" parts of the movie, especially in Congress.
There was one line that seemed especially prescient, considering the message of the movie:
Recommended, but only if you've already seen the better movies out right now (Juno, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood).

Saw this last night. I enjoyed it, Philip Seymour Hoffman played the best character in my opinion. I thought Julia Roberts character was pretty useless for most of the film though.

As a history/political buff I enjoy these types of films, so I'm probably biased, but I really liked the movie. They way they portrayed Wilson and Gust Avrokotos , the CIA and the other international players as imperfect heros drew me to the film and kept it from being too preachy. I think they handled the historical context very well.

It was only okay in my books. It did feel a bit rushed, which I find odd, since I think that most movies end up being longer than they should be. Robert's accent was fine, but those Godawful wigs were just plain distracting. They were just as bad as Hanks hair in DaVinci Code.
