I'm excited for this one. Bring it on.

MartinBlank 10-16-07 12:22 PM

Is it just me or is it weird that they're gonna remake a film that still manages to pump out direct-to-video sequels?

Johnny Zhivago 10-16-07 12:34 PM

I don't even care anymore... Whatever. Pass. Next.

Kelkee 10-16-07 01:16 PM

At least the redo of Halloween makes sense. The '78 movie was a blockbuster when it was released and one of if not THE greatest modern horror film ever made. I hated that they re-made it ... but I understand why.

Hellraiser, eh notsomuch. Poor box office earnings when it was released in '87. Current earnings are paltry and an appeal to only Clive Barker/Hellraiser fans (do they even exist today?). Doesnt even qualify as a successful cult 'hit'. Sequals were horrible across the board and Clive Barker stopped being relevant to the genre more than a decade ago.

I remember watching this in '87 and being shocked but uninterested. It was new and different then. But I never watched it again. Other than the shock value the story was forgettable same with the characters.

Today ... whoop de do, another repackaged-gross-out-porno-flick pimped to the masses for the quick buck. YAWN.

Clive briefly touched on this subject in a recent interview with IGN:

"Hellraiser, as it is, is fine. It's being remade. I will, perhaps, have something to do with that. Maybe some producorial capacity, but it won't be any hands-on kind of thing. I like spending my time working with people who are comrades. Hollywood is a two-faced world. I'm fed up with it. I want to make work that works. And if I'm going to work outside of this - and by that I mean the writing that I do - I've got to have the freedoms that this gives me, that the writing provides Otherwise, why do it?"

Great article covering many topics!

I was just going to say, I thought Clive Barker hates remakes. When I saw his name attached to this I was a little shocked.

this is nothing about the remake of Hellraiser or even Clive's opinions on 'remakes' - but when the hell will he get around to creating a special edition/longer cut of 'Nightbreed'?

DonnachaOne 10-16-07 02:25 PM

Well, I'm looking forward to it. The original could do with an improvement.

If you read the article I posted he says that he has given up on any intention to do a DC DVD. :(

Ugh, part of the charm and creepiness of the original comes from the fact that the original didn't have a huge budget or anything like that. What we'll get with this remake is an over-the-top, "slick" production, and as a result it wont be anywhere near as creepy as the original version.

But maybe they'll be wise enough not to concentrate on CGI and anything else that can make it "slick". Maybe they'll pay more attention to general atmosphere and some minor details that make Hellraiser utterly creepy. By the way I wonder what they're gonna do with music - Hellraiser soundtrack plays major role in creating the film's universum. Original music still gives me creeps when I hear it even not watching the movie itself.

We can maybe all we want - we can say, "maybe Uwe Boll will make a classic film for the ages one day" as well, but we all know that isn't going to happen either.

Get ready for "XTREME CGI", way more gore, and "perfect looking" teenagers ahoy! Not to mention that blasted "slick" look that almost all of the horror films seem to have these days.

Original Desmond 10-17-07 10:06 AM

the original is still very chilling and watchable ! i love the Hellraiser series

i would definitely check out a remake

Brent L 10-17-07 10:10 AM

The original Halloween is pretty much my favorite horror flick ever, so when I heard about a remake I said that I'd definitely check out the remake, and I did just that.

And it was horrible on an entirely new level of awful.

A Hellraiser remake will be grouped in with the Halloween remake, and other such atrocities, and not with the pretty good remakes like Dawn of the dead. That one was very much something of a rarity.

Nesbit 10-17-07 12:39 PM

The only one I enjoyed was the third one. I don't understand remaking this without Bradley. It would be like remaking Nightmare on Elm Street with a new Freddy. Hopefully the remake is evil as hell and feels satanic. I'm not a big fan of the series but that tone is what I felt made it stand out from all the other horror franchises.

You say that like it would never happen. I bet it'll be in the planning stages within the next two years.

Brent L 10-17-07 02:00 PM

I bet it's already in the planning stages. Now if you want to bet that we'll see it on the big screen within the next two years, then you're on to something. I heard a rumble about a remake of that series not too long ago already. Within the last year I heard that someone was interested in doing it.

Well, recall what they did with remakes of Dawn of the Dead and The Hills Have Eyes - they upgraded them, but kept the spirit of the originals. At least we know (I very much hope so) Uwe Boll isn't the one who's reshooting Hellraiser. Besides Clive Barker is involved...

I'm slow. After seeing the French horror film "Inside" I had nothing but faith that Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury would make this project awesome.

Looks like they have been off the project since April 08' and that the Weinsteins are looking at Pascal Laugier to direct the remake.

islandclaws 10-20-08 05:46 PM

So I guess they're really hoping to get a Frenchman at the helm here. Considering they're putting out some of the best horror right now, I don't blame them. I'm dying to see Martyrs. Inside was good, and well-shot, but some of the story elements were a bit far-fetched.

Giles 10-20-08 08:34 PM

Inside might have had a slight far-fetched story, but it was a quick romp through excessive gore and tension. Better than alot of shit that Hollywood is considering 'horror'

rennervision 10-21-08 10:29 AM

So how long before we get a remake of Alien?

Please no. That universe is large enough to have an original story come out of it.

Giantrobo 10-21-08 12:47 PM

Bu but but...it's been given to Foreign Filmmakers so it has to be good right? It won't be another crappy mindless neutered American remake if they're doing it right? At least that's the vibe I get from some here on DVDTALK. ;)
