Hmm ... more clues needed?

The movie was released in 1968. The star of the movie was born in 1887. He also made movies for these directors:

John Ford
Robert Wise
Jacques Tourneur
Mario Bava
Michael Reeves
Jack Hill

The movie is based on events that occurred in August, 1966.

EDIT: Thanks to GreenVulture for all his hard work. Also, this is a recent (in the 00's), mainstream movie. Enough of these foreign obscurities from me. I'm all about Hollywood this round.

Nope. This movie was directed by an actor. The actor was primarily known - to me, anyway - from being in one of the best movies of the '80s and appearing on one of the best TV shows of the '90s.

If I showed even a partial glimpse of the lead character in one of these shots, I'd wager you could guess it immediately - even if you'd never seen the film.

Nope. Among the supporting cast is one of my favorite actresses - who veers wildly between roles in quirky, obscure movies and mainstream fare(of which this movie is certainly an example). Some may remember her from when she was sexily naked in a certain stylish vampire movie, some may remember her from a grating will-they/won't-they sitcom, and some may remember her for her role as a goddess in a certain cult favorite.

While this movie was not considered successful, it got a spike in sales on DVD earlier this year.

That description sounds like Alyssa Milano, but I can't find any 00's movies of hers that were directed by an actor.

Shit, I did make her sound like Alyssa Milano - I didn't mean to. The actress in question is older (50+) and has appeared in movies directed by Tony Scott, David Fincher, and Joe Dante - but rarely in a starring role (her sexily naked character in the aforementioned stylish vampire movie didn't even have a name IIRC). In this movie she plays what passes for the "bad guy."

Oddly enough, the actor-turned-director in question and this particular actress were both in the same big-budget action/thriller in 1994. I should point out he probably wouldn't be considered a "successful" actor-turned-director - after this movie (his second feature) he's mainly directed episodes of various TV shows.

Based on your hints I was guessing Susan Sarandon (The Hunger) or Cybill Shepherd (Moonlighting). Both hot, but I got nuthin'

(I can't believe Cybill Shepherd was in Americathon. Earlier I had wrongly guessed that movie in part IV. I must be staying at the coincidental mansion on Khera.)

I was indeed talking about The Hunger when I mentioned a "stylish vampire movie," but I wasn't referring to Susan Sarandon (or Catherine Deneuve, for that matter) - which should significantly narrow the field of sexy nakedness seen in The Hunger.

I love Ann Magnuson. When I was a lad--long before I ever heard the term MILF--her scenes in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon provided me with a lot of fantasy material.

Well, I haven't seen it (honest), but working through your clues it must be Glitter.

Oops, too late.

I was debating whether to refer to her as the singer in Bongwater in my hints. "This actress was involved in a legal dispute with a former touring bassist for the Butthole Surfers," or "this actress appeared on an album cover as Raquel Welch from One Million Years B.C." - but I wasn't sure if that would help or hinder. Needless to say, she's the best thing about Glitter.

Why did it get a spike in DVD sales? I was focusing on sequels, remakes, or movies with people who just died.

Oh, and I'm not set up for posting screenshots now so I'll pass. Kudama time.

I was thinking of when the Rifftrax was released in May - several MST3K fans I know were digging Glitter out of the bargain bins then.
