Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
I read all the books and there's absolutely nothing in that trailer that offers even a remote hint of the source material, other than the guy's name. It looks like a generic Hollywood sword-and-sorcery fantasy. But there's nothing in the imagery that recalls Edgar Rice Burroughs. I'll pass.
And the stuff with Burroughs finding Carter's belonging is also directly from the book.
Storywise it looks surprisingly close to me. Even if it doesn't look aesthetically like I imagined it.

Seems like Ash was freaking out? Are we on your lawn, sir?
I'm open to this film. Hope it's good. Stanton's involvement w/ this keep me interested and hopeful towards it's quality.

- Alien design: Cartoony
- Dejah Thoris status: Plain and not almost naked
- Mars design: Boring
- Taylor Kitsch: He-Man
Yeah, sorry, this is a failure of a trailer.
JCoM story has so permeated the Sci-Fi pantheon of the last 60+ years that it will not feel fresh to anyone, regardless of how well its executed. This movie NEEDS an extremely strong visual identity, and this trailer does everything to show that it doesn't.

I kind of like the actress playing Deja Thoris but the trailer makes it look kind of like a generic fantasy film.
If think a film like this needs to be rated R.

Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
They show scenes of him on Earth in the West fleeing from people. That is how his story begins. They also show him suddenly waking up on Mars. There's footage of him leaping across great distances, which is something he is able to do on Mars. There are the green and red aliens. The red aliens are humanoid the green ones (which have four arms) are not. Even the clothing (or lack of) of the martians is pretty close to what Burroughs wrote.
And the stuff with Burroughs finding Carter's belonging is also directly from the book.

Exactly!
I wish that the Desperado director had been in charge of Princess of Mars. However, he may have been tempted to cast Rose McGowen as Deja.
Labor brought up some good criticisms.
Deja needs to be virtually naked. Preferably with red skin.
I thought Mars was going to look more red, and less desert earth looking. I don't like the He-man look either. It would be cool if there was some way to make him look NOT like a local.

If Robert Rodriguez had done it, it would have been guaranteed to suck. Here we can say it at least had a chance of being good.

Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
He looked like he woke up in an Arab's tent in the American west. Nothing Martian about that to me. I watched the trailer linked in the other post twice--I didn't see any red or green aliens in it. Maybe it's my computer--or my eyes--or it put me to sleep before I could see them.
I agree with most of your assessments, however. From that trailer, it's unclear if it even takes place on another planet -- and that makes me more than a bit sad. With the Pixar guys involved, I was expecting far more exotic landscapes to be on display. Never read the books, but from all the years of speculation about this project finally getting off the ground, I was fully expecting it to look epic. From the artwork, I pictured JC to be this rugged hero, but Kitsch looks lamer than Jake G. in Prince of Persia. Jason Momoa in the Conan reboot looks far more badass -- and that ain't saying much.
Too soon to tell, but I found the teaser to be immensely under-whelming. I wonder if Jon Favreau could have done any better... I know he was very close to doing this with another studio after Zathura. Even Kerry Conran (of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) seemed a good fit at one point... I'm sure his work with virtual sets could have been put to good use here.

I liked the trailer and liked Kitsch as Gambit. I'm in.

Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
The trailer like everyone is saying looks like a bore. For a second I thought it was a Prince of Persia sequel. This really needed to look like a live acton Frazetta work come to life, which none of the trailer looks like at all. But then again this is Disney so I should have known that it was going to be nothing like that.

Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
^ Total agreement. The one noteable attempt to capture Frazetta's style on film was in animation (Fire and Ice), so I would have loved to have seen these filmmakers attempt that look in live-action with a substantial budget. But with Disney involved, we'd have never gotten Frazetta's interpretation of Dejah Thoris on screen... for obvious reasons.
People can say whatever they want about Robert Rodriguez, but at least he had the good sense to offer Frazetta the role of design consultant on the film when he was still attached to direct it.

Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
I thought it was going to be animated because of PIXAR. I thought, "Hmmm. Like the Incredibles? Might be good though."
But it looks average.

Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
So I guess the thread title needs to be changed from Trilogy to "one and done."
And I can't believe they took out the of Mars in the title. Especially when the logo at the end is JCM!

Is Pixar even involved in this colossal waste of time? I hope not. Anybody can add in a few hokey aliens.
