Guillermo Del Toro To Take On "Mountains of Madness"

According to Latino Review, Guillermo Del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth," "Hellboy") has chosen his next project to direct his long-gestating passion project "At the Mountains of Madness".

Del Toro, currently filming "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," has apparently found a home for the project at Universal Pictures.

The acclaimed H.P. Lovecraft-penned 1931 story follows explorers who journey to Antarctica where they uncover the remains of highly evolved creatures neither plant or animal. When much of the party is slaughtered, the rest investigate the remains of an ancient civilisation.

Don Murphy's Angry Films is producing. Del Toro still remains attached to film a new incarnation of "Tarzan" but that script isn'ts finish yet.

Wow, This is news? Not to say repeat or anything but I guess I was just under the impression that this was already something set in stone. At least I've heard of Del Toro looking forward to this since the Hellboy days.

I had to check the date on this thread to make sure it wasn't from '05. Didn't Del Toro announce At The Mountains of Madness as his follow up to Hellboy, and then couldn't get the funding, so he dropped it in favor of Pan's Labyrinth? I know that at one point ATMOM was announced as his main project and then got dropped.

del Torro announced his involvement and was subsequently killed by a weighty manuscript flung from a building. The creature that wears his hands and face is said (by survivors) to buzz in subharmonic tones.

The project is still moving forward.

I've heard conflicting reports that he has in fact not died, but simply undergone a drastic personality change, with an insatiable hunger for knowledge.

He's been rumored to be working on this off and on for several years now (apparently he's already written a script) but it's been a long time since any new news surfaced. Even a rumor of movement on this project is good news as far as I'm concerned.

If I recall correctly, Del Toro never said this movie was set-in-stone, although it's been on his wish list/next-to-do pile since right before making "Hellboy".

This is news in that it's finally being set-in-stone as a studio finally picked it up.

Thank Cthulu! I've been hoping this would get to see the light of day. I can't think of a better cinematic marriage than Del Toro and Lovecraft. I've heard the script (assuming they use the same one) is fantastic and Del Toro displays such a profound love for the works of Lovecraft that I have no doubt this could be an amazing milestone in horror.

I remember him mentioning this at last Fall's DC pre-release screening of 'Pan's Labyrinth' with Guillermo doing a post film Q&A - should be fascinating!

I seem to remember a while back that he was also interested in making a movie based on The List of Seven by Mark Frost...now that is something I would get excited about, but I'm afraid that's never going to happen.

As much as I like Lovecraft (and think del Toro might be able to handle the infamously unfilmable author), the thought of Tarzan done in del Toro's style excites me even more.

EXCLUSIVE: Since he left The Hobbit, Guillermo del Toro's next film has been a hot topic of conversation. I'm hearing he will next direct At The Mountains Of Madness, an adaptation of the HP Lovecraft tale that will be shot as a 3D film for Universal Pictures. The big surprise is that Avatar director James Cameron will come aboard as a producer. Del Toro was non-committal when I asked him about the prospect of Mountains days ago as we discussed the Comic-Con reaction to Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. But when del Toro announced at Comic-Con he'd cowrite and produce Haunted Mansion, he told the crowd he'd set his next film shortly, and that it would be scary. At the Mountains of Madness fits that bill, even for del Toro and Universal.

This is fantastic news. I mean this is THE best possible news in regards to Del Toro.
I can't think of a better project and a better fit for him. :thumbsup:

He's not wasting any time setting up his projects. Don't know anything about the source material (is it a book series?) but I'll have to check it out.

3D could be really cool for this film actually. The huge deserted ancient city would work really well. They can emphasize how dauntingly big it is. Not to mention the creatures. I don't think del Toro is a "let's throw shit at the audience" director, and Cameron can give him really good guidance on how to use 3D effectively.

I really like 3D anyway (when it's done well), so I welcome this news.

3D is only cool when it's filmed as such. Most 3D 'conversions' don't work. This news has been on the backburner for a while but the resurfacing of this project is great news!

Am I the only one here willing to give this news a resounding FUCK YES?

This will own as long as del Toro has final cut. Cameron coming on to produce tells me the 3D will be worth it, unlike 95% of the films that use it.
