Juno -- d: Jason Reitman -- s: Ellen Page
Juno seems to be getting good buzz, and I think the trailer looks good:

Yeah this movie has deafening buzz right now.
Ivan Reitman's son? Check. (Well more, Director of TYFSmoking) Written by a blogger and former stripper? Check. Awards hype for Ellen Page? Check. George Michael (Bluth)? Check. Won at TIFF? Check. Great cast, looks good. |
I hope this isn't a threadcrap but I gotta say I think this looks awful. Fox Searchlight has been stringing out the "quirky funny indie" line since Garden State (followed by Napoleon Dynamite and Little Miss Sunshine) and this is clearly this year's entry into that picturesque string of hits. I think these movies are getting more and more self-aware and it's slowly moving from amusing and sweet to annoying and overly cutesy. I'm a big fan of Jason Reitman and I'm an even bigger fan of Arrested Development and its cast members, but I can't bring myself to jump on board this one.
Well, I hope it's better than Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite, but who knows. One review said the trailer is sort of misleading and doesn't do the film justice, but he liked LMS too, so that probably won't make you feel any better.
Anything with a cast member from Arrested Development at least has me interested, but to have both Michael AND George Michael in one film? Sold.
I <3 Ellen Page.
I'll be there! Saw the preview last night in front of Darjeeling Limited and it looks good. Thanks!
That's probably my favorite trailer right now. I love the use of the Mott the Hoople song.
The very first time I saw this trailer, it became my top "must see" flick. I can't wait to be able to check this one out.
I like the use of the Moldy Peaches song.
This movie does not disappoint. Loads better than Garden State or Napoleon Dynamite: ridiculously clever, constantly funny, very very heartfelt. Just great all around.
Can't wait - always looking for something that the wife and I can enjoy together.
I went to a free screening tonight and its really hilarious. Kind of dialogue heavy but overall a really good movie.
<3 this movie.
Fantastic film. Great screenplay and acting. Although the dialogue may seem strange at the start, Reitman directs a film, that at the end is near impossible to dislike. Go see as soon as you can.
9/10 |
and I know it was posted, but many more free screenings were added:

I'm going again tonight. If I go to a third screening I can try and win a Les Paul guitar.
caught this last night.
great movie, great cast. allison janney is perfection and possibly deserves a best supporting nom. also, jennifer garner, whom i usually strongly dislike, was pretty likable in this film. ellen page can come off uncomfortably mean/bitchy/annoying, but there is a lot to counteract that. edit to add: i just read the 1/2 star review on dvd talk (i believe there is also a 4 1/2 star review), and i strangely agree with almost everything the reviewer said. nevertheless, this movie was fun as hell to watch and i will surely buy it when it comes out. |

http://rsvp.foxsearchlight.com/RSVPS...hp?MoviesId=55 I love this film already and plan to see it no less than 5 times before I buy it on dvd. Love the trailer too. You can find the interview of Diablo Cody on Letterman on youtube when her book about stripping came out and she seemed very smart and cool. I really thought she'd become a successful author, but, wow, a great screenplay, awards, and I think she's writing a tv show now for Speilberg. |
Lots of buzz around Juno and Page right now, and even if the film loses a bit of momentum it still looks like it'll be the surprise/dark horse feel good entry into the Best Picture race.
Any chance on this getting a larger release?
Yeah, it will on christmas

Love Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Janney and Garner in this flick. I think the cast really made the movie work, because I loved it in spite of the script. I thought the dialogue was trying WAY TOO HARD to be hip, edgy and smart. Some of that started to bug the shit out of me, but everyone saying the lines is so damn good, I could get over it and still enjoy the flick. In the end I loved the movie despite being slightly annoyed every now and then. Well worth seeing and mostly lives up to the hype. Cast, music and Jason Reitman  Diablo Cody :thmbsdwn:

Besides, even in a Diablo Cody script, you'll never find a line that reads: "but everyone saying the lines is so damn good...." |

Is Jason Bateman nothing short of ingenious here?

In either case, I loved the movie. It wasn't a surprise that Ellen Page was a good actress, but she takes this movie on her tiny shoulders and lifts it as high as humanly possible. Through in a great performance by everyone else involved and its a gem of a flick that should be checked out. |
i tried to go see this movie twice over the wkend and it was sold out on fri and sat. i am gonna try again this wkend! it looks like its gonna be soo good.
The acting was universally very good, I thought the script rang relatively true (the dialog, as overwrought as it may seem, isn't horribly far off base), and the direction was great.
Not the most hilarious movie of the year by far, but entertaining and an overall good movie. |
I had a chance to see Juno last night and really enjoyed it.
For one reason and/or another I could not read what was on Juno's note and was wondering if anyone remembers what it said and could share it. |

Definitely a winner here, exactly what you want from a small indie film: smart script that is well-acted in the hands of a solid director.

I thought it was a good movie with a lot of problems. As others stated, it was very overwritten and the dialogue tried unbelievably hard to be "cool." It came across to me like a movie written by hipsters for hipsters. So much of the film was Juno simply slinging off one witty line after another. What zing is she gonna say next?!
I also don't think the film did a great job of forming any emotional attachments to the characters. The scenes between Ellen and Michael were the most heartfelt, but there were hardly any of them. Why did she love him? Why couldn't we see more of that evidence? And with Jennifer Garner...so she really liked kids...great. Do something with her character. She simply drifted in and out of the movie. It also felt like something more could have been made with the step-mother. So much of "Juno" was giving us the barest minimalist look at these various characters without really plunging into any real relationships between any of them. It was the scarcest glance at these individuals whom the movie wished to suggest were actually complex beings. There's definitely a better movie in there, and it felt like a lot may have been cut. I'm guessing in the hands of a more mature filmmaking team we could have achieved something greater. It's still a very worthwhile picture, but I kind of long for what could have been. |

I would go so far as to say that the only characters who were developed in any way were Juno, Bleeker, and Mark. And I think in the case of Bleeker and Mark, a lot of that came from the actors, not necessarily the script. Still, it wasn't bad, it just, as BJ said, could have been so much more, and the potential was right there on the screen. |
It would have been funny to have Bleeker and Mark in one scene together, just to have Mark give a raised eyebrow look of bemusement to Bleeker for knocking up Juno.
I think I wanted to like this film a little more than I ended up liking it, but Ellen Page is terrific as Juno, the 16-year-old teen who gets pregnant and looks at options of what to do with this unexpected development. I think the screenplay doesn't develop Bleeker too well, he's basically the sperm donor on record and guy friend of Juno, but Juno does quite a bit of growing up during her pregnancy, but in unexpected ways. The conclusion wasn't bad, I just wanted a little more bite to the story. But all in all, Ellen Page's performance anchors the film well (though the screenplay could have been a little tighter in developing Juno, instead of relying on Juno's caustic-ness and sarcastic approach to life at this point in her life, but she's ultimately rootable and likable).
I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B. |
