Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016, D: Ang Lee)
“What really happened there?” Kristen Stewart’s character asks her younger brother, Joe Alwyn’s titular hero, in the first trailer for Ang Lee’s war drama “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.”
Written by Jean-Christophe Castelli based on Ben Fountain’s bestselling debut novel, the film follows 19-year-old private Billy Lynn who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, return home temporarily for a victory tour after surviving an Iraq battle.
The harrowing trailer alternates between footage of the Iraq War and a celebration of the soldiers at a Alabama State football game on Thanksgiving Day.
The film, which also stars Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, Vin Diesel and Steve Martin, reveals through flashbacks what really happened to the squad — a stark contrast with America’s perception of the war.
“‘Billy Lynn’ is a story of love, courage and devotion,” Lee said in a statement on Wednesday after Sony’s TriStar Pictures released the first image from the pic. “It’s the story of a young man learning his place in the world, and of the special brotherhood among men at arms, the depths of their bonds and the sacrifices they make.”
Shot in 3D, at 4K resolution and 120 frames per second for each eye, the film’s groundbreaking use of ultra-high-frame-rate filmmaking for the military sequences is already generating Oscar buzz. Footage from the film wowed audiences at last month’s CinemaCon and NAB Show.
“Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” hits theaters on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

War movies like this in 3D seem really odd to me. But 120 fps per eye? So does that mean it's actually shot at 240 fps?
I want to be optimistic because I really like Ang Lee's directing, but this looks surprisingly Lifetime-ish.

I enjoyed the book, so I'll check the movie out.
Good to see Steve Martin in a dramatic role. I always said that if he used right, he could have transitioned into a dramatic actor like Tom Hanks has.

even though they are 2 completly different songs, the cover of "Heroes" playing over the trailer is a major ripoff of the cover of Creep playing over the trailer of "The Social Network".

They can do this?

No, that was the big talk when specs were being finalized for UHD, if they would set specs for 4k 3D. Which they didn't. So now we have this movie the the Hobbit trilogy being made at rates our current technology won't catch up with for 5-10 years from now.

So... is there a list of theatres that are actually showing this in true 120fps?
It's great that it was shot that way, but if it's impossible to watch it that way, why should we care?

They haven't done much to sell this one IMO. Perhaps it's just the way things have played out for me, but I haven't seen the trailer in theaters and I haven't seen TV ads.
Having seen the trailer for this and "Hacksaw Ridge", I find it hard these days to get charged up for a war film, -I find it hard to think they'll bring something different to it, that I'll want to go to the theater for. The visual gimmick for "Billy" is interesting, but I'd need to see something in the theatrical trailer (and seen in an actual theater) that would make me say "Wow! I've got to see this!"
Now, will this play in conventional theaters, or will this be like "The Hobbit" films and require special projectors? Those films didn't play in the anywhere close to me.

After reading the early reviews, it seems the distributor is hedging their bets on minimal advertising.

It looks pretty good to me. I'm not buying into the 4K 3D bullshit though. I fell for the similar gimmick with The Hobbit and it was a bust.

so as it turns out Sony is releasing this to New York City and Los Angeles on November 11 in 4K/3D/120FPS format; a week later for it's national rollout the movie will go out as 2D/24fps will be released.
