Credited in order of appearance - Why are some credits this way?

I was wondering why some films end credits are listed in the order that the actors appear on screen?

Who does the end credits? Does the director have the final say in the way the credits appear or is that up to someone else?

Can anyone name any movies in which the end credits appear in the order of appearance?

Just a guess, but I imagine it happens only in the case of ensemble casts where there is no "big" star to demand front billing. No arguing and egos over who gets it.

Woody Allen's movies are usually in alphabetical order.

And also the epitome of a minimalistic approach. I love that about his movies.

I like it when they're not in "star order". That way, the guy who plays Man in bar or Waiter can get top billing. :)

That, or there are too many big stars and you don't want to have to worry about their egos. Just go with order of appearance or alphabetical.
