California License Plates with PCI

Anyone else notice that a lot of the california license plates in the movies and tv have the letters "PCI" in them?

Is that some sort of code for fake plates like telephone numbers always have a 555 prefix?

Hmm...never noticed that. My guess would be that more likely than it being like the 555 thing, that there some particular rental company that Hollywood folks go to to rent cars for film productions and that they just happened to get a lot of PCI plates in sequence when they registered their fleet. When I used to work at a car rental company, that was how it was. When we got a new year's fleet, we'd go register them all at the same time and most of them would usually have the same 3-letter prefix. I doubt they are pressing special fake plates for every car used in movies unless it is to depict a personalized plate.

Actually, a quick internet search reveals that I'm wrong: they do make a lot of prop plates. Apparently they use letter combinations that the DMV skipped. And given what big business movies are in CA, the DMV probably assigns the movie industry letters they can use for prop plates.
