He says so much, and yet, so little. I'm excited, but I want to see a nugget of something. Early production art, sketches, whatever.

The subject header for this thread is painfully out of date.

^ True that.

Mods, how about changing it to something like: The Hobbit (dir. Guillermo del Toro) (2011)?

Casting Starts Today:

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2009...gin-on-monday/

In the last few weeks, we’ve heard from reliable sources that casting directors for “The Hobbit” have been assigned in Great Britain, but the ball is now rolling ‘for real’ in New Zealand! The site acting-auditions.org just posted an announcement that MGM Studios New Zealand casting for ‘The Hobbit” Part 1 will begin this coming Monday, December 14. Per their site:

“Casting is scheduled to begin next week, December 14, 2009, on the upcoming MGM Studios feature film “The Hobbit” Part 1. The project is now being developed as two films, and principal photography is tentatively scheduled to begin in New Zealand around May or June 2011. Please submit photos and resume by mail only. No phone calls or personal drop-offs.”

Principal Actor Casting:
Liz Mullane Casting
(Address TBA)

Extras Casting:
Miranda Rivers
PO Box 6479
Marion Square
Wellington, New Zealand 6022

The entry also lists associated productions companies, but emphasizes NOT to send resumes and pictures to them or they will likely end up in the trash. If you’re lucky enough to live in New Zealand, best of luck to you! If not, remember that there are requirements you must meet to be eligible to work in New Zealand. You can read more about it in our Hobbit Movie FAQ here.

Do you intend to submit a resume? Discuss it on our chatroom and/or message boards and keep us posted on your progress! Thanks to message board member shadowdog for alerting us to this great news!

Good lord, filming is still 18 months away?! Or is that sooner since it's in New Zealand? I'm bad with time zones...

I think 2012 is the currently expected release date...

Do films usually cast 18 months before they even start shooting?

OK, the semi confirmed rumor at AICN is that Tobey Maguire is being asked to be Bilbo.

This is awful. I mean it could be worse, they could pick some good looking action hero type, but the fact that someone in charge (either Jackson or Del Toro) thinks Tobey Maguire would make a good Bilbo...

I stick by my original pick (who at least physically resembles Bilbo):

I can't see either of those picks working.

I really find that hard to believe... not that I dislike Tobey, he just looks or sounds nothing like a younger Bilbo to me. I hope they cast someone a little older... 40ish would be nice. They don't need any big names for this thing, just cast the right actors.

Ehhh. Ricky Gervais looks too old to be Bilbo, If peter jackson thinks Tobey will work, then I am going to go with him.

Why can't they just put some makeup on Ian Holmes? They can make actors look old but not old actors look young w/ makeup?

Bilbo is in his 50's in the book.

He is also overweight. I don't expect them to use a fat old man (although they should), the studio will never go for that. I just don't think it ought to be a young good looking well known star.

Ian Holm is too old for the physical requirements of the role.

Bilbo was in his fifties in the book.

For that matter, so was Frodo in the bulk of "The Lord of the Rings"... seventeen years passed between his 33rd birthday at the beginning (and Bilbo's 111th) and him leaving the Shire with the ring. But since the movies were time compressed, everyone just sort of let it slide.

Yeah but 50's in hobbit is 30's in human years.

I thought Ewen McGregor was looking pretty likely, or is that old news?

Groucho 12-15-09 08:50 AM

re: The Hobbit

At this point, it's easier to just list actors who HAVEN'T been rumored for the role:

Kenan Thompson
Abe Vigoda

Corey Feldman makes the most sense. Tie it back to The Goonies as a de facto sequel.
