I think I've read that one.

Yes, but Part 1 will only deal with leaving home. 3 Hours of it. :)

I DON'T think Jackson will direct, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Guillermo del Toro got asked by Jackson to take the job.

Please let him ask Guillermo Del Toro. A movie like this needs a director with a vision, and the ability to realize that on screen. We don't want another Golden Compass on our hands.

Wouldn't it be easier to just hire a fresh new actor and then digitally insert him into the original trilogy later on? :)

If Jackson asks, I think Del Toro accepts.

JumpCutz 12-19-07 09:37 PM

I would very much prefer Del Toro over Raimi.

It's not quite as simple as that, as they had already applied some de-aging techniques back in 2000 on Ian Holm for his part at the beginning of the film (up to when he left the Shire). Now, they'd have the de-age him further. Considering the methods they used (one method was pulling his skin tight and hiding the extra skin under his wig, not a comfortable experience), I'm not sure it's entirely feasible for Ian to look as youthful as he needs to be with just practical effects.

However, they could possibly use digital de-aging, like how they applied it to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen at the beginning of X3. I don't know how expensive this would be to apply it to the main character over the course of two films, however.

Raimi would do something really lame and have Bilbo break out dancing for no apparent reason ;)

Leonard Nimoy is freakin' awesome. How can you NOT like his singing?
By the way, that song is on an album that also includes "Highly Illogical", which is a song he does as Spock, singing about women and dating.

It's hilarious.

Giles 12-20-07 08:28 AM

it's not about Nimoy's singing par se, but it's the attrocious attempt at choreography and pure cheeze.

chris_sc77 12-20-07 09:29 AM

I'd like to see Werner Herzog do it with a cast of real midgets.

BUt that isn't likely to happen so I'd settle for Alfonso Cuaron.

Drop 12-20-07 10:25 AM

I really think Raimi is the perfect fit, especially since Jackson is producing. I bet the average person won't even know. I feel Raimi will be completely respectful to Jackson's work, besides I'm sure Jackson would just cut out the shit he doesn't like.

oh so you're advocating a producer's cut then... let a film be mandated not by the director.... hmmm that doesn't seem completely fair.

He sounds open to the idea, to say the least...

EW.com has asked Guillermo del Toro the all important ‘Hobbit’ question, and his answer has this ‘del Toro’ fan pretty excited: “You know, I think I’ve been abroad too long. I’ve heard some rumblings, but nothing official. I don’t want to think about it because it’s such an eventuality. It’s the only Tolkien book I read. I tried my best to read Lord of the Rings, the trilogy. I could not. I could not. They were very dense. And then one day, I bought The Hobbit. I read it and I loved it. So it would be a privilege. But listen, I wish I knew. At this stage, after Hellboy II, I’m unemployed. [Laughs]

TylerDurden_73 12-20-07 12:59 PM

Here's another vote for del Toro. Sam Raimi jumped the shark with Spiderman 3. He needs to find a project a little closer to home and re-establish himself with that, before he helms something as big as the Hobbit.

You just gave me a heart attack. Now I'll be sad for a while knowing this won't happen.

Damed 12-20-07 01:55 PM

Sam Raimi was just confirmed on doing a horror film (directing), so The Hobbit may not happen for him...

That's funny to read when you know that Jackson absolutely worships at the feet of Raimi, and his first few movies were basically homages to Raimi's work.

And Raimi's new horror movie will be a quickie (script was written 15 years ago, and due to the strike, can't be re-written). He'll should finish it in plenty of time should he decide to do Hobbit.
