What's your favorite aspect ratio?

Pretty simple question: which OAR is most pleasing to your eyes?

Giles 07-18-07 02:33 PM

I picked 2.55:1

really it depends on the movie

example: IMAX films should fill the screen not black bars for 2.35 DM'Red Hollywood films.

JPRaup 07-18-07 02:56 PM

Wider the better for me

Mondo Kane 07-18-07 02:59 PM

2:35

But too bad a majority of spaghetti westerns I own on DVD are foolscreened to hell.

Randy Miller III 07-18-07 03:00 PM

I like 1.78:1 / 1.85:1 for the most part. 2.35:1 just seems so cramped most of the time.

Doughboy 07-18-07 03:01 PM

A 2.76:1 movie hacked to 1.33:1.;)

Mr. Cinema 07-18-07 03:08 PM

2.35:1

hardercore 07-18-07 03:12 PM

Action or adventure movies, films with vast landscapes - 2.35:1

Dramas and comedies - 1.77:1 or 1.85:1

Hate 1.33:1

Maxflier 07-18-07 03:17 PM

1.85:1

fumanstan 07-18-07 03:17 PM

1:85. 2:35 is ok, but my eyes just seem to prefer 1:85.

sinister 07-18-07 03:31 PM

movies with alot of great visuals and cinematography have to be 2:35 or 2:40. ala LOTR, Star Wars, Gladiator, Apocalypto, Harry Potter, Pirates.

eedoon 07-18-07 03:33 PM

It really is depends on the movie. A modern movie shot in 1.33:1 would be very weird indeed, but I've seen great composition on older movies so I don't mind that. But I guess I prefer 1.85:1 most of the time because sometimes movies which shot in 2.35:1 have too much distortion on both side of the screen when it was being photographed by less than good cinematographer. That is, if it's unintentional, of course.

I like when big epic movies use 2:35:1 or wider, but i do love 1:85:1 because it fills my 92" screen.

Goldberg74 07-18-07 05:49 PM

;)

Bandit03 07-18-07 06:21 PM

1.78:1 / 1.85:1 is my favorite.

DthRdrX 07-18-07 06:34 PM

Theater - 2.35:1
Home - 1.78:1 or 1.85:1

^this. except for the 92-inches part. ;)

Michael Ballack 07-18-07 06:47 PM

2:35/2:40 is my favorite. It gives a movie an epic feeling that some of my favorite movies of all time have used.

I disagree, some action movies where there are monsters or giant robots (ahem... 'Transformers') should take advantage of the height aspect of 1.85 than the wideness of 2.35. Spielberg knew this full well when he shot 'Jurassic Park'

- dramas set in exotic locales: 2.35
- comedies with alot of characters and pratfalls 2.35 [i.e, I'ts A Mad Mad Mad Mad World]
