No data is out yet obviously but with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opening tomorrow, we can start our guesstimating. What I'm hearing for HPV is about $40MM for Wednesday. Warner Bros. is not doing any pre-midnight showings, but of the 15 screens near here doing midnight shows, only three of them are not sold out already.

The IMAX screen has no evening shows available until Sunday.

Does anyone know the theatre counts for this installment?

Box Office Mojo doesn't have exact theater counts yet, but the estimation is over 4100.

Are people really calling this HPV?:fart: It'll be interesting to see what it's second weekend numbers are like since that's when the next book is being released.

'Potter' rocks at box office
Midnight shows bring in $12 million

The midnight shows for "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" brought in $12 million, the most for a Wednesday opening midnight run after "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," which clocked in at around $8 million.
In terms of the full day, the record for the biggest Wednesday opening is held by "Spider-Man 2," which made $40.4 million. Warner Bros. has a shot at nearing that record with "Phoenix," which bowed on a monstrous 4,285 screens domestically.

The midnight take for the last film in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," was $6 million, and that was on a Friday. Opening day take for "Goblet" was $40.1 million.

Overseas, opening day numbers for "Phoenix" in eight Pacific and Asian countries, including Australia, were also leaving Warner execs feeling magical.

Pic's estimated cume in those markets was $7.8 million. It was the biggest opening for any of the Potter pics in Australia, Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Opening day take in Australia was an impressive $3 million, the fifth highest ever.

In Korea, "Phoenix" made $1.5 million, or 59% higher than the opening number for "Goblet."

Studio expected "Phoenix" to gross $5.5 million on its opening day in France. Figures for France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Brazil will be available Thursday.

"Phoenix" reps the widest domestic and international opening in Warners' history. Studio dispatched 13,001 prints overseas.

David Yates directed "Phoenix," the fifth film in the franchise.

cant believe Harry Potter is as popular as it is. I never cared for the flicks, They all feel like the same movie, almost like a scooby doo epsiode, the way they handle the villians and the people behind it.

I hope when I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (Kevin James + Adam Sandler= COMEDY) comes out on July.20th it crushes that horrible Harry Potter movie. I know I havn't seen the new movie yet (I've only seen the first two) but the two I saw were awful.

I never understood the huge appeal of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. I guess the little bit of nerd in me is with Star Wars.

Cause their is no debating that Darth Vader is way cooler then Gollum or whatever bad guy in the Harry Potter movies.

I can't really argue with you, I liked the first one, the others, especially the last one, not so much. Particularly given that you have the British Character Actor All Star team, people like Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Jim Broadbent, Emma Thompson, Maggie Smith, etc, you would expect some really great and memorable performances. But the scripts are mostly just plot driven and follow the books, trying to cram too much in(which seems to be the problem with this one). Maybe they have been afraid of offending JK Rowling or the fanboys or didn't want to tamper with a winning formula. Didn't stop Peter Jackson with LOTR, but then Tolkein had been dead for a long time.

I hadn't thought of it like Scooby Doo, lol, but now that I think of it, Shaggy=Ron Weasley? Velma=Hermione?

Can't disagree more with that, especially with each passing film. The stories are formulaic (like all fairytales), but it's the characters that shine. With the past three films they've had some really great little moments with that characters that add up to really rounding them out and setting them apart. They are becoming, or already are, one of the greatest stories about growing up.

As for standout performances Alan Rickman tends to steal every film. Gary Oldman showed so much with Sirius Black considering how much little screentime he has had. Branagh as Lockheart was one of the best parts of the series.

Different strokes is all.

I went to see Transformers the other night and there were a ton of people lined up for HP at midnight. I've only seen one of them in theaters (part 4) but I think I might go check this one out in IMAX. I've enjoyed the series so far even though none of the films have really blown me away.

It'll be considered a failure, but I think Evan Almighty may actually get to the $100 million mark.

I didn't think it would, but it is hanging in there just enough to make that 100 million. I guess there are so many sell outs to other movies, people have to see something. If they had just kept the budget in check with reality, that would be a good number.
