More Stupid MPAA Tomfoolery!!!!!

From imdb.com:

Pirate Trap Set by MPAA

The MPAA has set up a decoy website aimed at snagging pirates, according to the website blorge.com (whose motto is "technology with attitude"). According to the website, Media Defender, operating on behalf of the MPAA, has set up a site dubbed MiiVi.com that offers "fast and easy video downloading all in one great site" including software that it says speeds up the downloading process. However, according to blorge.com, the software actually searches the computer for other copyrighted files and sends the information back to Media Defender.

How can it be a trap if everyone knows about it beforehand?

The Bus 07-05-07 03:16 PM

Doesn't work. :(

Groucho 07-05-07 03:17 PM

It would be funny if they were sued by Nintendo.

Yavin 07-05-07 03:17 PM

"But how could they be jamming us if they don't know ... that we're coming?"

Because they have to make that disclosure to obtain consent, or else it's illegal to do so. They figure that most people won't bother reading the fine print.

Awesome. I hope it snags a lot of kids.

how can they sue you if they are under contract to give you free movies? you can't give away something for free and then sue the person receiving it for taking it

I doubt they actually have movies to download. They just want you to think they have them so you will set up the searching software.

I can see them catching a bunch of amateurs---but the people they should really be targeting wouldn't fall for this anyway.

Probably the only people they're planning on catching are the people going to Google and typing in "free movie download" or "download Ratatootie free".

Zen Peckinpah 07-05-07 07:45 PM

Not sure if this is off-topic, but this is what you get when you download a bootleg of Wild Hogs or Evan Almighty: a shitty movie, shitty quality, and a shitty consequence.

Seantn 07-05-07 08:01 PM

But if you download a great movie, it comes with wonderful consequences.
