Mulcahy to Helm Scorpion King 2

I actually think this could be good if the Rock returns. I really liked the first movie, and the sequel has the potential for great stories and battles.

Shock has been tipped off that Resident Evil: Extinction director Russell Mulcahy is moving from the arid locale of one sequel to another: Universal's The Scorpion King 2.

The first film, a prequel to the studio's "Mummy" franchise, opened in 2002 to a $36 million three-day gross - it made a grand total of $91 million domestically by the time it ran its course. Regardless of the reviews it proved to Hollywood that The Rock - who was mostly seen in The Mummy Returns as a CGI'd tail-shakin' baddie - had star power.

Unfortunately, we haven't received any further word regarding the sequel's plot or casting details. A new "King" poses a tremendous opportunity for Universal to tap some serious cross-promotion as Rob Cohen heats up a third "Mummy" chapter.

Mulcahy, an Australian filmmaker, previously helmed Razorback and Highlander. He has dabbled in some mummy lore himself with Talos the Mummy in '98 and, most recently, The Curse of King Tut's Tomb.

The Scorpion King was a great guilty pleasure, bring on the sequel!

fumanstan 06-14-07 08:22 PM

I enjoyed the first, although i don't think many people did. I'd love to see a sequel as long as The Rock comes back.

boredsilly 06-14-07 08:26 PM

The first Scorpion King movie was enjoyable, but it definitely could have been a better movie.

No doubt in my mind that if they treated this next movie with a bit of care, it could be a monstrous success.

Bluelitespecial 06-14-07 09:49 PM

I would rather see another Doom movie, but we all know the Rock won't be in that.

"The Scorpion King needs more jocularity!"

First one does rank as a guilty pleasure for me. I'll see it.

Only worth doing if the Rock returns to the role. He made the character and to replace him I think would just turn this into another half-baked sequel (even moreso).

 I have been watching the M*A*S*H DVDs for the past month & thats just great!

Anyways I would like to see The Scorpion King 2 as long as the Rock returns. I'm not saying the first one was a great movie by any standard but it was indeed a guilty pleasure.
Hope they give it a shot & don't fuck it up so bad like (& I know its not exactly the same genre) like Hostel series (of course the first Hostel wasn't all that great either).
Plus the Rock needs some more dough to pay for the child support he will be having to start paying to his wife when they offically get divorced.

I guess I'm the only person that thought Scorpion King sucked major ass? Horrible, horrible movie!

RocShemp 06-15-07 04:59 PM

I liked it. It was fun but could have definitely been better.

So will Mathias finally go bad in this one? Cos his being a good guy really bothered me in the first.

Maxflier 06-15-07 06:22 PM

Lots of Scorpion King love in this thread, I enjoyed it quite a bit myself.
Looking forward to another one as long as it is The Rock, if not they should not even bother.

You're not alone Morf. I thought it was awful, but I understand how people could like it as a guilty pleasure.

I'm with the naysayers on this one. The first one made me wish a large rock would fall on my head.

Agreed that this is a total guilty pleasure for me also. The Rock has such great charisma and energy that it's infectious; I can't help but watch him on screen. If he comes back I'm in, if not, I'm done.

BobSchlapowitz 06-16-07 07:29 PM

I enjoyed the first one but I would rather The Rock return to the WWE.

Agreed, the WWE completly sucks right now & he would be the only reason I would return to watching wrestling again.
I'm not saying hes the greatest wrestler of all-time or anything but he has great charisma & I'd like him to beat the shit out of that Cena character.

Joe Molotov 06-17-07 09:22 AM

Mulcahy's going to make it so that in the second one, it turns out that The Rock is from the Planet Zeist.

Seantn 08-10-07 03:57 PM

Some news people might not like: The Rock isn't in this movie. It's a prequel, and The Scorpion King will be in his mid teens to early twenties. It is being made as a "DVD original film".

The words steaming pile of garbage come to mind. I would have been interested if The Rock was coming back.

islandclaws 08-10-07 06:52 PM

<-- officially over it

So its a prequel to a prequel (The Scorpion King) of a sequel (The Mummy Returns) to a remake (The Mummy).

Seantn 08-10-07 09:19 PM

ToddSm66 08-10-07 10:10 PM

There's a third Mummy movie coming out?
