Thomas Hayden Church - why bulk up for spiderman-3 ?

Thomas Hayden Church was told to bulk up for spiderman-3 (I think they wanted him to bulk up even more than he did). Did him being buff add anything to the movie ? His fights with spidey were as sandman, I so do not see the value in him bulked up.

I agree. I thought it was pretty pointless. Would've made sense if Eddie Brock was bulked up but oh well.

Would it have ? Brock also did not directly fight spidey. I rather think it would have been detrimental for him to be bulked up

I read somehwere that Ed Norton was told to bulk up a lot so that he can portray Hulk with no CGI.

He could have pulled it off without bulking up.

No actor worth his salt will take a roll like that and NOT bulk up. The exception would be a roll that calls for them to lose weight or be skinny.

But WHY ? The character might have been bulked up in the comics, but for this movie, the character did not ever portray being strong, except when in sandman mode.

I don't know why I'm discussing this, because the movie sucked, but for the sake of argument... you ever try to pull yourself up a fire escape ladder by your arms?

I can see hitting the gym hard for a couple months to get some size for the character, but they're claiming he bulked up for 16 months before filming. That's absurd for a role that really amounted to very little in the overall scope of a crowded film.

Brock need to be buffer. He was in the comics and he should have been to appear MORE menacing than Spidey in the film, not as an equal.

Sixteen months? A year, as well as one-third of the following year? His physique does not seem to parallel that kind of work...

What are you talking about ??? He had significant muscle. Gaining muscle is not all that easy.

Still, in 16 months he could have packed on a lot more. I'm assuming the studio pays for a personal trainer, no? That being said, Church may've been working on something else in the meantime.

Plus most convics bulk up in Prison don't they? He was fresh out of Prison(escaped) and when he was mutated his physical self remained the same. His body, in his human form, was locked into his current bulk/size.

Personal trainer or not, theres only so much the body can gain in muscle. Personla trainers can help in motivation and in corrcting form, they are not a free pass to Mr Olympia physiques.
His account of his regimen is the most realialistic I've seen - no cardio, meals immediately before and after lifting.
