And...
Peter Jackson was said to be quite surprised that Gosling had showed up to start work on "The Lovely Bones" looking like he'd donned a fat suit. According to sources, the 26-year-old Gosling had apparently told the director he was going to gain weight to age himself up to play the part of a grieving father, but Jackson was still expecting some movie star allure -- not paunch and a beard. By Friday, Gosling had left the high-profile production over those pesky "creative differences," and, by Sunday, he'd been replaced by 36-year-old Mark Wahlberg, who actually could be old enough to father a teenager.
The film, based on the popular book by Alice Sebold, is about a 14-year-old girl, Susie Salmon, who is murdered by a neighbor and watches how the tragedy affects her family from heaven. The cast includes Rachel Weisz as her mother, and Susan Sarandon as her grandmother.
Gosling's departure comes on the heels of his indie pic "Lars and the Real Girl," which, according to Boxofficemojo.com cost $12 million. So far the film has earned $316,000, and will go wide this weekend. A DreamWorks representative declined to comment, as did Gosling's manager.
Still, "The Lovely Bones," which starts shooting today in Pennsylvania, will continue relatively unhampered.

I can't wait for this movie, if only for the fact part of it was shot on Main Street, in Royersford, PA. I grew up a block away from the location, and during a recent, brief trip, saw the "made-up" street. It was neat to see, and just a cool thing to know Peter Jackson (for a brief time) hung out in the same area you did.
They put the signs back up for Allen's, a variety store that closed down maybe ten years ago that I went to all the time. Next door used to be a card shop as well where I'd go everyday after school to buy baseball cards.
I talked to my mom's fiance last night and they were supposed to wrap up in Royersford at 2 a.m. this morning.

I haven't read the book but the trailer makes it look incredible. My sister has read the book and thought the trailer was nearly perfect.

Looks good, though it seems like they give quite a bit away.

Agreed. The first 2/3 of the trailer are beautifully done, but then it seems to be pitched like a supernatural thriller. Too bad. I suppose if I hadn't read the book I'd be completely stoked, however, because it looks quite exciting.
I really loved Sebold's story, and I always felt the resolution of Suzy's murder was secondary to her posthumous "life" and how it impacted those still alive. When I think back on the novel, I remember less about the catch-the-killer aspect and more about where Suzy was and what her friends/family were doing.
In lesser hands I'd be apprehensive. But it's Peter Jackson, and he craps gold bars in my opinion, so I'm there...

And, the trailer seems to be gone. But you can see it at www.apple.com/trailers.
I'm in. It's nice to see Jackson doing something a little less bombastic.

Not crazy about the girl from Atonement but this is a must-see. Beautiful visuals. Would have preferred someone other than Wahlberg but we'll see how he does.

Not doing it for me...it comes across as trying to be too many things without being successful at any of them. That's just what I take from the trailer, hopefully the film is good.

I saw the trailer yesterday and the movie looks really good. I like Ryan Gosling but I'm glad Mark Wahlberg got the role of the dad instead.

After The Happening, the presence of Mark Wahlberg in anything makes me nervous, but it's Peter Jackson and crew, so I'm there. Plus, Rachel Weisz is in it.

But I'm not sold on the CGI heavy heaven/afterlife/in between stuff. It's way more over the top than I'd like to see (although that ship crashing through the bottle was pretty damn cool!).
I'll still see it though.
