Out 1 (Jacques Rivette, 1971) screening in Chicago
Okay, I am terribly unfamiliar with Rivette's work. I saw Va Savoir(2001) when it came out, and found it charming if unremarkable.
Other than that, all I knew of Rivette were references to his works from critics and writers on film. Every once in a while I'd come across some callout to Celine and Julie Go Boating(1974) or L'Amour Fou(1969) or to be particular, his 729 minute (or 225 minute version of) Out 1(1971).
So I didn't really have a grasp on his style or his themes when I eagerly picked up a ticket to see Celine and Julie Go Boating 2 weeks ago.
From what I've read, Celine and Julie... is Rivette's most madcap and funniest work (and considered by some to be his best). The film absolutely astonished me. I found it hilarious and amazing and understood the title of the retrospective "Jacques Rivette: Cinema as Adventure". Rivette takes the viewer on a ride that defies narrative coherence in favor of touching and amusing moments that themselves build upon the telling of a story in as purely a cinematic fashion as I've seen.
I was won over, and happily bought tickets to the screening of Out 1 this weekend in Chicago. I know that this film is probably not as nutso as Celine and Julie... but if it's built upon the same principles, it should be another exciting film adventure.
So I've read some things about Out 1 leading up to it so I'm not going in totally blind. I'd enjoy reading any opinions from any members too!
Or let me know if you're in the Chicago area and planning on seeing all or some of the 4 screenings.
