John Woo to direct live action He-Man

From Superherohype:

John Woo to Direct & Produce He-Man
Source: Variety October 4, 2004

Variety reports that Fox 2000 has set John Woo ("Paycheck") to direct and produce He-Man, a live-action film based on the characters in Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" line of action figures. Adam Rifkin will adapt the screenplay.

Originally made into an animated series in 1983, the property was also adapted into a live-action film in 1987 called Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren as the hero and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

He-Man began life as Prince Adam, the hybrid of an Earthling and an Eternian. At the age of 18, he was taken to Castle Grayskull, where Adam received super powers. He-Man has a sidekick in the form of a tiger, Battle Cat, and a deadly enemy, Skeletor.

Woo is also attached to direct The Rock in the video game adaptation "Spy-Hunter" for Universal Pictures.

And his American backslide continues. :(

Trigger 10-04-04 03:22 PM

It's both tragicly sad and hilarious to see him whore himself out for a buck in Hollywood when he was once a highly respected director whose name was synonymous with asian gun-fu movies.

fumanstan 10-04-04 03:31 PM

I can't picture He-Man holding guns in two hands shoot diving :(

Groucho 10-04-04 03:34 PM

fumanstan beat me to the joke. I'm done.

C'mon.. just think about Man-At-Arms doing that. :D

Jackskeleton 10-04-04 03:46 PM

Wasn't he also attached to Metriod? Seems like smoke blowing.

Trigger 10-04-04 03:48 PM

Jon Woo = Uwe Boll

Rivero 10-04-04 04:23 PM

Woo, babe. Give it up. It ain't worth it. Save what credibility you have left from your groundbreaking Chinese work and abort this project. American recognition isn't what it's fuckin cracked up to be. Trust me. Just abort, man, and go back to what you did best and what people loved you for.

majorjoe23 10-04-04 04:25 PM

And what about him directing a live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? I'll take this annoucement just like I do everything I hear from Quentin Tarrantino: I'll believe it when I see the first preview.

Carson Kressley of 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' NEEDS to play Prince Adam!!

He already has the hair; and I'm sure he'd find the pink vest and light purple tights just glorious!

harosa 10-04-04 05:27 PM

Isnt this like the 10th thing he's attached to? And Trigger, Woo's worst film will be 100 times better than anything Boll ever does.

darqleo 10-04-04 05:39 PM

John Woo seems attached to a lot of 80's cartoon/video game movies. When's he going to start making 'em???
;)

Agreed. He needs to stop it with the Hollywood action cr!pfests and go back to writing AND directing his movies. Where's the story and heart among all that action???

I was a big Woo fan until he came over to America. HARD TARGET's director cut (I have an "archived" version on VHS) was OK if you can deal with Jean Claude Van Damme's acting... BROKEN ARROW was a good extended action scene, but thin on plot... FACE OFF was his best American movie if you can suspend disbelief with the face changing, but other then that..... geezus.

Plus he's becoming a parody of himself, you can almost guarantee flying doves (or other bird) and slo-mo gun battles, with somebody holding 2 pistols at one point.
For He-Man, maybe he'll have Stratos flying in slo-motion while Man-At-Arms is firing two laser pistols?
;)

Woo should take what he has left of his talent and go back home where he can actually make good movies.

 I'm just trying to imagine him fighting alongside Teela and Man at Arms and telling him that he can't wear that into battle.

lol. I was thinking about starting a thread about how confused John Woo is. I don't think he has a clue what to do next.

Spy Hunter?
He-Man?
Metroid?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Pick one John. I bet he is looking for his own franchise.

jaeufraser 10-04-04 08:35 PM

Actually I was really pulling for John Woo's Pac Man.

LOL
'nuff said.

Love Face/Off and his Hong Kong movies, but his decline is really laughable at this point.

eisenreich 10-04-04 08:54 PM

Wow, definitely wore out my laserdisc copy of the animated movie as a kid. Can't see this doing well, even though skeletor was pretty bad ass

Sunday Morning 10-04-04 10:28 PM

When will john woo direct himself back to hong kong and make more substantial movies like he did before he came to america to direct jean claude van damage?
Fortune cookie says: Not anytime soon.

Phyre 10-04-04 10:43 PM

Er, isn't Woo going to China to shoot the largest Mainland production ever, of Romance of the Three Kingdoms?

demonio 10-05-04 02:10 AM

I'm looking forward to it......cause I HAVE THE POWER!!

harosa 10-05-04 04:54 AM

Phyre, just add that also to things he is attached to. I can only disparage his choices, not his talent, in everything he has done (even in his worst films yes, even some HK ones and that laughable Lundgren one he did)), there's a glimmer or piece of gold in one or two action beats. Everyone just has to face the fact that the man doesnt want to go back and make films in HK, maybe he'll write and direct something here although the genre he excels in has been ground to death here, although if anyone can resurrect the form its him.

ytrez 10-05-04 07:56 AM

From the Killer to He-Man.

My, how the mighty have fallen:(
