Wenk to pen 'Masters of the Universe'
Jon M. Chu is set to direct the live-action He-Man pic

Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have decided to continue riding the hot hand of scribe Richard Wenk ("The Equalizer"), who has been tapped to rewrite He-Man pic "Masters of the Universe."

Jon M. Chu is set to direct the live-action film based on the popular Mattel toy line.

Story follows a young prince who becomes a warrior and sets out to defeat the evil Skeletor and fulfill his destiny as He-Man.

Escape Artists' partners Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing.

Alex Litvak and Mike Finch wrote the initial draft of the script, which was originally titled "Grayskull."

Pic has been in development several years, and the property was previously adapted as a 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella.

Sony and Escape Artists have been high on Wenk ever since his script for mid-budget thriller "The Equalizer" prompted Sony to close Denzel Washington's deal and set an April start date for a film that could launch Washington's first franchise if it is successful. Pic is loosely based on the TV series that starred Edward Woodward, and producers are expected to settle on a director in the coming weeks.

Wenk previously penned the action-thrillers "16 Blocks" and "The Mechanic," and he most recently co-wrote "The Expendables 2" with Sylvester Stallone. The Lionsgate sequel has grossed $289 million worldwide since opening in mid-August.

Wenk is repped by the Gersh Agency, the Arlook Group and Schreck Rose Dapello & Adams.

I look forward to this one getting delayed a year from its intended release date because there isn't enough Channing Tatum.

Why? He's clearly a shoe-in for Man-At-Arms. Jonah Hill can be Orko.

Chris Hemsworth, while definitely looking perfect for the part, might worry about being typecast in these types of roles.

Yeah, Hemsworth is a guy's guy and handsome to boot. He'd be a perfect He-Man. Totally fits with the mold of Adam as depicted in the script I posted earlier in this thread.

Even though it'd be a speudo retread of Thor, Colm Feore would be a great Keldor/Skeletor.

Looking at the director's filmography makes me not very interested in this. When the best things you've done are the Step Up sequels I dunno about how I feel about the choice. I liked He-Man as a kid though and if it looks semi-decent I may see it.

Oh and I want He-Man in briefs/underwear just like the cartoon. I don't want him with fucking GI JOE tights or whatever.

Well he wore tights and furry trunks as Prince Adam:

Slacks as the 2002 Prince Adam:

Only fur trunks and boots as He-Man:

Ditto for the 2002 He-Man:

Though they can always reuse Dolph Lundgren's costume:

Given the original He-Man action figure was a prototype Conan the Barbarian action figure (before Mattel freaked out when they saw a rough cut of the movie), that quasi-barbarian look certainly suits He-Man the best.

It's real. I'm actually a tad ambivalent towards it. It looks like a fun Ghouls & Ghosts type game but I think He-Man could also be done as a harder edged God of War type game.

Didn't expect to see them make the characters all cute and midget looking...it does look like a ghouls and ghosts (which I love)...got that 2D old school vibe. It does look fun. I agree on making it hard edge...but have you noticed that when it comes to making a faithful adaption to He-Man they do the complete opposite.

Would be awesome to see a game of He-Man God of War style and using the same voice as the cartoon when he transforms.

I wonder if they would put Cringer in the movie as well as making him speak.

re: Masters of the Universe - News, rumors, etc.

Yeah, using the original voices would be awesome in GoW-style MotU game. But I'd still play that game, despite the irksome cutesy look.

Cringer appeared in one of the earlier drafts. Although I was initially disappointed that he didn't speak, I actually liked how they introduced him.
Spoiler:
He was one of the feral beasts serving Beast Man (who himself had sworn allegiance to Skeletor). He even tries to kill Adam but later saves Adam because Adam spares Cringer's life.

I like that script idea.

re: Masters of the Universe - News, rumors, etc.

I'd love to see a He-Man game like a massive RPG/Skyrim type game or a Borderlands world where you could use He-Man or play as one of his sidekicks and fight alongside him. They could basically make a massive world with various enemies from throughout the show as well as have all of the characters play a part in the game. Being able to go to a fully fleshed out Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain would be bad ass.

Forget He-Man, they need to do Thundarr the Barbarian, the realized marriage between Road Warrior and Conan the Barbarian.

I never realized 'til now that 2002 He-Man was sporting a fanny pack:
