Shrek the Turd? Looks like it may be, i'll find out tomorrow - though I'm not excited about it.

Hey, Saved By The Bell is awesome!

And so is Shrek! the first two were fantastic. Enough with the bashing. It's gonna be great. I can't wait to see it tomorrow. Give me some donkey!

Hokeyboy 05-17-07 07:17 PM

Ebert gave it **1/2 out of ****. He gave both the first two flicks ****.

RT is at 42% and dropping. Looks like we're heading towards another disappointing sequel. But I never liked the SHREK films much anyhow so it's not like I have any level of expectation.

I take that back. The first one was pretty good. The second, though... atrocious. :yack:

The Bus 05-17-07 09:07 PM

Each time I saw the first, it kept getting worse. I never saw the second and have no plans to see the third, although for a second I considered it: it started playing about 5 minutes ago at a theatre near me.

TheMovieman 05-17-07 09:40 PM

Have only seen each one once. Didn't mind either but I don't have the inclination to see them again... or this one as I can't stand a theater full of kids. This is a DVD viewing for me.

Matthew Chmiel 05-17-07 09:54 PM

I thought Shrek was shit.
I thought Shrek 2 was total shit.

Yet, I am seeing Shrek the Third tonight at 10pm with a slew of friends. I really don't want to go, but I really don't want to stay at home either. :(

Looks like they're trying to catch up with the number of Land Before Time sequels (though not nearly as horrid and not direct to video). And of course now Land Before Time is a daily tv show with the same fine quality as all the sequels.

Saw Shrek 3 tonight & it was better than 2 but nowhere near the original.

Shrek 1 got ****, Shrek 2 got ***.

matome 05-18-07 08:34 AM

^Pretty much my feelings toward them.

Dr. DVD 05-18-07 08:57 AM

Looks like it finally ran out of steam. Doubt that will affect its box-office though. I actually loved part two and thought it was better than the original. This movie is, first and foremost, a pacification for little kids for about an hour and a half.

Supermallet 05-18-07 11:10 AM

It's a shame, Dreamworks' first animated film (Antz) was hilarious and featured Woody Allen. Then we get Shrek and it's bye bye quality!

I am glad I am not alone. I never understood the love for the first Shrek. The wife and I saw it at the theater and just didn't get what the big deal was. The laughs were few and far between (mostly fart jokes) and the characters were pretty obnoxious. The animation was decent but when you get used to the quality of Toy Story or even Finding Nemo as a whole, Shrek just never seemed special other than being produced by a studio other than Pixar.

I disliked the first one so much that I still haven't gotten around to seeing the second one. I can't imagine how bad the third one since it is getting poor reviews and the first one got such high praise.

I'm with you brother. I saw the first one and just sat there without even a smile on my face. I thought the animation was sub par. The "humor" stale and dated (pop references). And a terrible soundtrack. I avoided the second one and caught some of it on cable. Same ol', same ol'. I just don't get the appeal.

devilshalo 05-18-07 11:56 AM

Here's hoping Shrek the Third turns into Shrek the Turd.

I thought the first was ok, but it was really hard to sit thru the second.

Matthew Chmiel 05-18-07 12:14 PM

I thought Shrek was shit.
I thought Shrek 2 was total shit.
I thought Shrek the Third was horse shit.

Besides two scenes which I thought were actual genuinely funny -- one which was in the theatrical trailer (with Shrek christening the ship and having it burn down in flames) and one which happened to be an inspired Six Million Dollar Man parody -- this film is an even worse exercise in making money. All of the "jokes" are just stuck together apart of a plot that's paperthin and has no resemblance of a structured story. It seems all of the celebrity voice actors recorded their material in a few hours over the phone just to cash a paycheck. The theater, which was only about a quarter full, only laughed a handful of times. Simply put, the reaction wasn't too positive aftewards.

I really hope this entry is a box office failure, but I know that won't be the case and it'll be a hit. What's more upsetting is we have to sit through this shit even more with a Christmas special, a sequel, and a spin-off coming our way. :(

Easily one of the worst films I've sat through all year -- and I saw Vacancy, The Hills Have Eyes 2, and Next.

You should check out Over the Hedge. One of the funniest movies.

Quack 05-18-07 12:23 PM

I thought it was alright, I don't see why kids won't like it.

I was thinking of seeing a movie last night and was thinking about seeing the Shrek 3 premiere. The movies you listed were my alternatives.

Dr. DVD 05-18-07 12:33 PM

I think that what's happening with the Shrek series is that a lot of people are beginning to realize that there never really was much to write home about. It's kind of an emperor's clothes scenario.

Definitely, at least in my case. I got some laughs out of the first movie the first time. Subsequent viewings on DVD were just painful. The whole potshots at Disney shtick (and let's face it, that's all it had going for it) was a one-time only laugh deal for me. Afterwards I just felt embarrassed I laughed at it the first time.

Anubis2005X 05-18-07 04:28 PM

I for one love both Shrek movies. Can't wait for this tonight... It's not like it's Open Season or something, bleghhh....

Open Season was slightly entertaining.

Shrek the Third is not.

Wait, I think i've identified a pattern. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that I really don't think you should see Part 4.
