what modern and past stars are equivalents?

there are some modern actors/directors who fill the same kind of role, or do the same kind of movies as actors/directors of the past.

so what modern and past stars do you think are equivalents?

Roberto Benigni can't match what Charlie Chaplin does.

And for the last time, Cary Grant is not like modern day George Clooney!

Neither of these comparisons are accurate. And the first one is so heinous, it prevents me from participating further.

Nicholson = Gable is a good comparison.
Katharine Hepburn = Meryl Streep (Awards magnet, Classy, Long-lived career)
Jerry Lewis = Adam Sandler (Very popular in high concept formula comedies)

"My Cousin Vinnie, I love that! I, George Costanza, could be on a date with an Oscar winner! An Oscar winner, Jerry! You know what that's like? It's like if fifty years ago, someone fixed me up with Katherine Hepburn? Same thing"

Ed Begley, Jr. is like a modern-day Ed Begley.

Seriously though, I always thought Kevin Costner and Robert Mitchum had similar laconic acting styles, although they don't look alike,

Maybe not what the OP had in mind, but I was watching Return of Dr. X last night and (Thanks to co-star Wayne Morris) I'll know what a middle-adged Heath Ledger will look like
