What happend to this movie? I remember seeing commercials for it, but it never showed up.

Did Bale sign an MGM deal or something? Almost nothing good comes from this studio... except the occasional Bond.

Nowadays, MGM is primarily a distributor (although they're trying to get back to their studio roots...witness the rebirth of UA). Meaning they picked up the North American distribution rights for "Rescue Dawn."

This is a trailer spliced with behind the scenes footage. I think the movie looks fantastic.

Kind of a surprise that Werner Herzog is doing this, but between him and Bale, I am so there.

It's actually based on a documentary that Herzog did a few years ago. It's called Little Dieter Needs To Fly. Definitely worth checking out.

I finally saw Rescue Dawn a few weeks ago, it's worth checking out if you're into these genres. Steve Zahn is my favorite part of the film; he's so fantastic. Bale's character is this quirky German-turned-American; it took me a bit to get the character, but he eventually pulls it off (Bale went method for the role, eating live maggots and such). Zahn is definitely the standout though.

Ah ha! I actually own that documentary. My interest in this film has just gone up tenfold.

Bale's character was born and raised in Germany, and then he moved to America and joined the Air Force (and then the navy), becoming an American citizen along the way.

I thought he was Welsh. One of his earliest roles was in the Kenneth Branagh version of 'Henry V'

Bale is Welch. His character in "Rescue Dawn" is German-turned-American (I don't know the right term...German-American wouldn't be appropriate since that doesn't infer that the character was born and raised in Germany). It results in some weird speech patterns at moments, as Bale tries to hide his native Welch accent while mixing together a German/American one. I found it somewhat distracting at first, but you get used to it.

It's a good movie. I watched it last September when it screened up here. I was actually wondering what happened to this one myself. It's about time Herzog got into mainstream theatres

Got a wider release today, just saw it. I liked it a lot.

just saw it this afternoon, still mulling it over... but generally really enjoyed it.

I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival last year. I really enjoyed the film. My only complaint would be that the humor in the training film scene seem a little forced and unnatural.

Herzog, Bale and Davies were in attendance for a Q&A. You know that nervous, quirky character that Davies plays in a lot of his films such as his performance in "Solaris." He is just like that in real life. He would start to ramble and they would have to take the mike from him.

have you ever seen some of those training films - they often are very campy, that was kind of the point, the awkward acting, the narration is a tad tacky and often can't be taken seriousily, when they obviousily should be.

Not wide enough. Still waiting for this to show up in my area. :(

I didn't mean the training films themselves. I would assume those were accurate. I meant the wisecracking from Bale and the others. It seemed to try and project a humor and camaraderie that didn't ring true to me.
