The Grindhouse inspiration thread
OK, I figured this would be a good thread to go after a sort of "what's next" type thread. Say you saw Grindhouse and are now inspired to see other movies like it.
So, here are my examples, most very obvious (since I'm not a huge "genre" buff). Maybe G. Noel can throw in some help here. If you liked Planet Terror, try Land of the Dead. (Of the "Dead" movies this one seems to have the closest "flavor"). If you liked Thanksgiving, try Last House on the Left. If you liked Don't, try Suspiria. If you liked Werewolf Women of the SS, try Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS (an obvious inspiration, but I have not seen the actual movie, so I might be wrong). If you liked Death Proof, try Vanishing Point (obvious). I'm no expert in these kinds of movies, but that's what came to mind with me. I'd like to see what came to mind with you guys. I've read a lot of reviews simply talking about grindhouse cinema but not too many specific titles have been named. |
Ok, I think I get it.
I like Memento.... I like 12 Monkeys.... Can someone finish the sentences for me? |
If you liked Planet Terror: try Demons.
If you liked Thanksgiving: try Halloween, Friday the 13th, Black Christmas, Silent Night Deadly Night, April Fool's Day, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Birthday to Me, amongst others. If you liked Don't: try Deep Red. If you liked Werewolf Women of the SS: try Ilsa, Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks and Ilsa, The Wicked Warden. Or take two televisions, put them next to each other, and have The Howling play on one and Triumph of the Will on the other. If you liked Death Proof: try the original Gone In 60 Seconds. |

I would not recommend LAND OF THE DEAD because of cheap looking fx, but instead try this movie called DEMONS. It came out in the 1980's and it is loaded with heavy metal music.

Don't is more of British horror than Argento.

(Not being smart, just wondering). Sleepaway Camp. Return to Horror High. Slumber Party Massacre. Last house is just too different to be comparable to what was shown in the Thanksgiving trailer. |

If you liked Planet Terror, try Cannibal Apocalypse
If you liked Thanksgiving, try Silent Night, Deadly Night. If you liked Don't, try Horror Hospital. If you liked Werewolf Women of the SS, try Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS & SS Hell Camp If you liked Death Proof, try The Car |
All good suggestions. I'll try a few more.
Machete: Hell, just try looking up about any Golun/Globus, Canon, New World, Imperial, or Vestron released action flick from the 80's and you're right as rain. Exterminator 1&2, almost anything with Wings Hauser as the star, etc. Planet Terror: Gonzo action and splat-horror/horror-comedy. Cannibal Merceneries, Story of Ricky, The Seventh Curse, Re-Animator, From Beyond, Evil Dead 2, Return of the Living Dead, Street Trash, Bad Taste, Braindead, Escape from New York, Total Recall, They Live. I agree the big two influences seem to be Nightmare City and Cannibal Apocalypse. Thanksgiving is just too easy. Don't: Any number of psychadelic Brit horrors like The House That Dripped Blood, Vault of Horror, Tales from the Crypt, The Mutations, And Now the Screaming Starts! Death Proof: Another obvious (namedropped) one for the car crash bit is Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, also try White Lightning, Moonshine County Express, Cannonball! The only two drive-inish car-horrors I can think of are The Duel and The Car. Plus, I guess you could include non-grindhouse, chatter-heavy youth flicks like Slackers, Clerks, and The Diner, cause there was a whole lot a talkin' ;) The number of genres is and titles is huge. Just crack open the door and start looking. |
There's an interview in "Rolling Stone" with all five filmmakers, explaining how they got on board and their inspirations.
An extract from Tarantino's interview:

CGI for car stunts doesn't make any sense to me -- how is that supposed to be impressive? You can't compare it to the chase scenes in The Driver or White Lightning or Dirty Mary Crazy Larry. A great chase scene that people might not know about is in an Italian crime movie by Fernando Di Leo: it's been released to video under a million titles, including Manhunt and Hired to Kill. And Robert Butler did a fabulous movie around 1980 called Night of the Juggler -- that has a car chase with James Brolin all through New York that is basically the first fifteen minutes of the movie. One other really terrific car chase off the top of my head is from Strange Shadows in an Empty Room, also known as Blazing Magnums. It's an Italian movie but it was shot in Montreal. And the set-up for the chase scene is completely dumb: Stuart Whitman is a Dirty Harry-like cop who goes to question somebody and the guy just takes off. So then they have one of the most thrilling car chases ever, and when he catches the guy, he's like "Okay, I just wanted to ask you a few questions." It's like something out of Police Squad -- there's twelve people dead back there during this chase and you just wanted to ask him some questions? http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...use_trailers/1 |
