So, I'm watching this and about to turn it off. It's just flat out an ugly movie. The montages every 5 minutes don't help either. Yes, Bale is great but everyone aside from Ward is unlikeable... and I don't mean that as a compliment. It's just an ugly picture. Does it get better?

Edit: Finished it. It really didn't get better. I expected it to be predictable as most boxing movies typically end the same way. Albeit, I think Cinderella Man did it the best in making us cheer for the underdog. The rest of the film came off emotionally manipulative and I think it really only had one powerful scene which involved Bale and Adams.

Thought the film was overrated and I don't understand the praise for Amy Adams. Sure, we've never see that side of her but not Oscar worthy. Great performance by Christian Bale though.

Enjoyed it alot, especially Amy Adams. I thought she was terrific. Just an effortlessly realistic performance that will get buried in Bale's shadow.

Yeah, I think Adams, Bale and Leo did a great job.
Mark had to kind of just be there. Wasn't his fault so much, kind of a thankless role despite being about his character.

Mark Whalberg's role is to be the slightly dumb rock that can't decide between his career and his family. He's not a very smart or interesting guy, but he's the eye of this crazy hurricane that surrounds him. I think he did just fine in his role, he could've gone over the top and tried to out shine a crack addict and his crazy mother but that would've hurt the movie.

Real Life Alice Ward has passed away at 79, from The Lowell Sun;
LOWELL --Alice Ward, the mother of retired welterweight champion Micky Ward, died peacefully at about 1 a.m. Wednesday at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston.
Ward's son, Dicky Eklund, confirmed her death Wednesday afternoon.
In January, Ward, 79, went into cardiac arrest at a Boston hospital. Family members say she stopped breathing for 45 minutes on her own while doctors and nurses frantically tried reviving her. But she regained consciousness and eventually started breathing on her own.
On Tuesday, doctors took Ward off life support. She was surrounded by family, Eklund said.
Actress Melissa Leo won a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and an Academy Award for playing Ward, who managed both her son's boxing careers.
Ward moved in this world at a time when women's main role in boxing was carrying numbers around the ring in a bathing suit.
Doctors on Tuesday estimated Ward would survive about two to 12 hours off life support. She hung in for another day, Eklund said.
Ward raised nine children, including her grandson, Dick Eklund, Jr.
"We lost the leader of our family," Eklund said. "She was a great woman, a strong woman. She taught us all what it means to be strong because she never gave up on any of us."

Thought I made some comments in this thread after having seen it but I guess not.
I loved it....this generations Rocky (although two different types of boxing films) Yes, I went there.
If you watch any of features on this film you will see why Whalberg gave somewhat of a muted performance....it's how they are in real life.
Bale...don't even need to really say much....excellent acting.
Seen it three times so far...love cranking the volume up during the fight scenes.

Just watched this tonight, I thoroughly enjoyed it, way better than "The King's Speech". They were all great in their roles and Adams gave me the confidence I needed it for her Superman role.
