Is it safe to say that Jim Carrey's career is pretty much over?
 

I used to like him a lot but ever since he started to try and be this serious actor, he lost that it factor I guess. I think he's great in comedies and think he should just stick to those but I have this feeling that he's not going to do that. Has he done a comedy since Bruce Almighty?

It just seems to me that he is trying desperately to get an Oscar and I don't think that'll ever happen.

I liked him in the Truman Show but I think that was more so because the movie was well-written and well-done. I thought his performance was good not great.

Now with the movie 23 that was pretty much a bomb, I think he's on his way out. Steve Carrell has taken his place and is also a far far better actor than Jim Carrey could ever hope to be. I think he'll end up taking a lot of the acting gigs that Jim would otherwise get.

I guess we'll see 5-10 years from now.

I disagree. I like the fact that he's branching out from straight comedies, to stuff like Eternal Sunshine and Man on the Moon. I think everyone involved was blemished by The Number 23, so I wouldn't hold that against just him. His run from 94-98 was amazing and probably won't be topped, so seeing him in a bit of a slump now doesn't necessarily spell disaster for his entire career. I think he just needs to be smarter in picking roles, and now that he's fired his agent (apparently over The Number 23 debacle), he might start making better choices.

Steve Carrel has taken his place? Really? What proof do you have of this? Steve has ONE 100m film to his credit (not counting LMS, he wasn't the lead). Jim has how many? How many other $80m films? Even Steve's next big film is a JIM CARREY sequel.

Steve is a talented guy, but his accomplishments pale next to Carrey's. Just silly to even insinuate otherwise.

Even if Jim Carrey weren't making $20 million a movie and having each movie do over $100 million at the box office, that doesn't mean his career is over.

He was great in Man on the Moon, and he was great in Bruce Almighty.... He's as talented as ever, he just needs to make better choices as to the roles he takes on.

Yeah he might not be raking in the huge hits like he used to, but his body of work is growing more diverse. His turn in ETERNAL SUNSHINE, one of the best-reviewed films of the decade, was quite impressive. He still had a $100m+ hit in DICK AND JANE, and BRUCE ALMIGHTY, although 3 years old, was still a $220m+ grosser.

We all should have a career being "over" like that. :lol:

about Steve Carrell, the only movie i think he has ever done has been the 40 year old virgin and little miss sunshine.
Jim Carrey's career is still going strong and i think it will for years to come, the number 23 sounds pretty intresting to me & ill pick it up when it comes to DVD.
through maybe some of his movies arn't the greatest at least hes been doing stuff unlike some of the celebrities today.

And Bewitched. And Bruce Almighty. And Anchorman. Just off the top of my head.

He's pushing 50. Frankly, I don't want to see him in those zany type roles that made him popular back in the early to mid 90s. It's what made Fun With Dick and Jane from being a great movie. His performance literally dragged that movie down and held back its potential to be an intelligent comedy along the lines of Thank You For Smoking.

I think he's got plenty of great movies ahead of him, and maybe even some great comedies, but he needs to evolve as an actor. Nobody wants to see an old ass man run around and try to act like he's 30 again.

I'll probably get a kick in the balls for this but I've been reading the Fletch books and though he is older than the charachter I can picture Jim Carrey doing the charachter justice.

Come on, only two of his movies have not earn back the cost:
The Majestic(2001) and Man on the Moon(1999)

His last 5 movies have made money!

Not many movie stars can say that.

And for that matter, he was excellent in Man on the Moon, it just wasn't necessarily a film for mainstream tastes. It was an art film on a big movie budget-but that wasn't his fault. His performance was great.

Too bad about The Majestic, I think that may be his most underrated performance. Loved that one.

He is really good in dramatic roles. I think part of the problem is the dramatic roles he chooses don't have a mass audience appeal. That's not necessarily a bad thing, unless the studio sinks a lot of money into the project because his name is attached to it in anticipation of a box office winner. I think the studios also have to be more careful...it's one thing to cast him in roles like Man on the Moon and Majestic and what not....but for the love of Mike, don't market those movies as Jim Carrey movies. You will pull in audiences that want goofy Jim and not the core audience that appreciates more artistic movies with content Maybe by being more selective of his roles in the future he can reach a wider audience with more serious roles.

And I thought he was awesome in Truman Show, too.

Well I for one am happy Jim's career is sinking, because like any actor when that happens it means he has to return to do a sequal to one of his hits. Which in his case is ACE VENTURA!
