A comprehensive exploration of cinematic exploitation
 

Everywhere I go on the web, I see "Top Ten Most Violent Movies EVER" type of threads with dubious entries like Kill Bill Vol. 1, Sin City, and Ichi the Killer. GIVE ME A BREAK!

I never seem to find anything that does REAL justice to a word like violence.
I'm talking about kinetic water resevior-type bloodlettings in the fashion of Versus, Lone Wolf and Cub, or the craziness Woo unleashed before the American's tamed him. When I say violence, I mean elaborate battle gorefiestas. And Japan is my lifeline.

At the same time, I can appreciate many different genres, its just that I struggle to satisfy my inner barbarian from time to time. I'm only happier to see a film that can pull of more than just wicked action. I'm asking any of you likeminded cinephiles out there if we can come up with a good list of recommendations not just to satisfy my own selfish needs, but maybe others who are curious as well. I'll kickstart this list the best I can:

Elfen Lied
Versus
Lone Wolf and Cub 70's series
Hard Boiled
A Better Tomorrow 2
Bullet in the Head
Lady Snowblood
Braindead
Dead or Alive (the Miike one! lol)
Shiri
Sha Po Lang

Some movies I haven't seen yet, but their reputations have impressed me:
Pretty much anything with Kaji Meiko (female prisoner scorpion, for example)
70s and 80s Kinji Fukasaku (Samurai Reincarnation, Legend of the Eight Samurai, Yakuza Papers, etc)
Sister Street Fighter
Miike Takashi makes varying levels of violent movies...

Personally I found manga more obscenely violent and sexual than anime will ever be.

Ichi the Killer is more violent than probably half of the movies you listed.

But props for listing Braindead. Best movie ever.

And you want true exploitation? Go watch August Underground's Mordum and the Guinea Pig series.

Thanks for all the replies! Yeah I dunno; its not that I only want to see Asian movies, its just that they seem to be the ones with lots of action and gore. I get the impression lots of western movies with serious gore don't have much to offer in the way of fights, which is why something like the Guinea Pig series is not as appealing. Thanks again.

IMO, how violent a movie is depends on the emotionl buildup behind it. It's not just gallons of blood or the body count.

You just pretty much took your entire list from my collection (including the films that you mentioned not seeing yet) :eek: ... scary!!! Perhaps I need to tone it down a bit ...

And yeah, I'm not too familiar with world cinema but there are quite a few violent offerings originating from Japan.

Some that I would add to the list (not necessarily from Japan):

2LDK (the entire film - though with a sense of (black) humor)
Irreversible (two specific scenes)
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (the video sequence and the revenge specifically)
Cannibal Holocaust (you name it)
Hanzo the Razor (in the same vain as Lone Wolf .. sort of .. and with a "twist"!! :))
