British Sci-Fi movies?
I am interested in British movies, but it seems trying to find good British sci-fi movies is really difficult. I realize they haven't always been the leaders in science fiction over all, but they have contributed quite a bit to sci-fi TV...I am surprised to find so little science fiction coming from their cinemas.
So what are the best titles out there that I could look at? |
Quatermass and the Pit (aka Five Million Years To Earth.) This is a movie that's almost literally haunted me since my childhood.
|
I've always been a fan of Things to Come (1936).
|
And there's also Day of the Triffids.
|
The titles already mentioned are terrific choices, along with:
JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE |
Gorgo
|
Does 28 Days Later count? More horror, I guess, but it does have some sci-fi elements.
|
Quatermass Xperiment- Only out on Region 2 :(
The Man from Planet X X The Unknow Night Caller From Outer Space Lifeforce - Silly but fun film about vampires from outer space. |

Does Children of Men count?

Some good ones already, especially the Quatermass movies and Day of the Triffids. Another classic is Village of the Damned (and to a lesser extent its follow-ups). Some others are:
The Man Who Fell To Earth (David Bowie movie) Fahrenheit 451 The Fiend Without a Face First Men in the Moon Hardware (needs a DVD release badly) 1984 Zardoz (ok, a lot of people hate this ... it's goofy as hell, but it's Sean Connery and John Boorman, and is really cool looking) Brazil Island of Terror (a favorite from my youth ... Peter Cushing versus bone-sucking monsters) |
The Projected Man(R2)
Island of the Burning Doomed(R2) |

Biggles: Adventures in Time
|
Four titles not mentioned so far that are really good and worth seeking out (although, regrettably, they are not on DVD):
Earth Dies Screaming, The Mind of Mr Soames, The Invasion! Unearthly Stranger And I second the recommendations of: Day the Earth Caught Fire Island of Terror Night Caller From Outer Space Night of the Big Heat (Island of the Burning Doomed) X the Unknown And all 3 Quatermass films, especially Quatermass & the Pit |
LifeForce
12 Monkeys 1984 Brazil |

I also second (or third or fourth or whatever by this point) "The Day the Earth Caught Fire." I just think it's one of the best Sci Fi movies ever bar none. No crazy special effects or weird monsters or bizarre worlds, just a really good story very well done. |
