AFI to do another 100 Greatest Films special (huge omission from the ballot)

I just found out that the American Film Institute is going to do another 100 years 100 movies special. This time including the films that have come out since last time. I was reading through the ballot and noticed that James Whale's Frankenstein is on there. However the sequel Bride of Frankenstein was not eligable. BOF is widely regarded as one of the great films of all time and is also widely regarded as being superior to it's predecessor.

How could they miss such a classic?

They always miss many classic films, new and old. It isn't something new.

Well, there are way too many movies worthy of consideration. Several must get cast aside.

I do not think it's 1 film per a year. At least I hope not.

I can't think of one movie from 1997-2007 that I would add to the old list.

I agree.

Frankenstein is classic in terms of being Iconic, but Bride Of Frankenstein is the better film.

I bet they include Titanic and Saving Private Ryan on the new lists.

Maybe Return of the King.

1997:
L.A. Confidential

1998:
The Big Lebowski
Rushmore
Saving Private Ryan

1999:
Eyes Wide Shut
Fight Club
The Matrix
Three Kings
Toy Story 2

2000:
Memento
You Can Count on Me

2001:
Black Hawk Down
Mulholland Dr.

2003:
Lost in Translation
Mystic River

etc.

Are these ALL part of the 100 best films ever? No. But I don't think AFI's list is really all that great anyway. The Matrix isn't a well-made film, but you can't deny its influence. But dismissing the last ten years of American film with an offhand comment like that seems like trite flamebaiting.

(If we were talking international movies, that list would be at least 2x as long).

You can go HERE to download the ballot that was sent out, to see which films were included.

I think it'll just be interesting to see how much the list changes. Some of my favorite movies are listed on the ballot, but I doubt most of them make it into the top 100.

Those are all great films. I own nearly all of them on DVD and I enjoy them. I still wouldn't put them on any top 100 list along with the likes of Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Singin' In the Rain, 2001, et al. Films need time to become part of a canon, it's too soon to add these films. Even the '90s films that were on the previous AFI 100 best list (Titanic, Pulp Fiction, Fargo) feel strange in the company of the older canon.
