Awesome, thanks The Cow!
These are the comics:
https://www.comixology.com/search/it...=SINGLE_ISSUES
Basically the Ordway run of
Power of Shazam 38-41 (The Monster Society of Evil parts 1-4)
Power of Shazam 44-47 (when the series was cancelled... an issue 48 was published 10 years later under Blackest Night)
I loved the Ordway run but haven't read it since the single issues came out originally. DC Universe also has the first 35 issues of the series on their service.

Bad news though: no onslaught of pandering "cool, hip" jokes. Sorry.

Shazam! Projected To Have Lowest DCEU Opening Weekend
Warner Bros.' Shazam! is currently projected to have the lowest box office opening for a DC Extended Universe movie yet. The DCEU turns six years old in 2019 and has already seen its share of commercial smash-hits (Aquaman, Wonder Woman), misfires (Justice League), and those that fall somewhere in-between (Man of Steel). Nevertheless, the future looks pretty bright for DC's superhero franchise, between a promising slate of movies scheduled through to 2022 - one that includes Wonder Woman and Aquaman sequels - and the early positive worth of mouth around Shazam!, following its first round of pre-release screenings.
Directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation), Shazam! tells the tale of Billy Batson (Asher Angel), a teenaged foster kid who gains the ability to transform into a Superman-like hero named Shazam (Zachary Levi) simply by calling out his name. The Shazam comic book character is obviously not as popular or well-known as superheroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, so it's long been expected that his movie would open on the softer side, by DCEU standards. According to the latest projections, that will indeed be the case.
According to Variety, Shazam! is currently predicted to gross upwards of $40 million during its opening weekend at the U.S. box office early next month. For comparison's sake, Aquamandebuted with $67.8 million in the U.S. this past December (the DCEU's lowest opening yet) and Wonder Woman opened with $103.2 million domestically back in June 2017. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice still holds the record for the DCEU's highest stateside premiere, with a $166 million three-day weekend take.
Beyond that, there's inevitably going to be a movie series in any cinematic universe that starts off being far less popular than its peers (even the Marvel Cinematic Universe has Ant-Man, after all). Shazam! already has the makings of a unique and fresh addition to the DCEU thanks to its generally playful tone and distinct action-comedy vibe, and should prove to be a worthwhile addition to the larger franchise for it. Assuming that's the case, it'll eventually attract the bigger crowd that it's going for.

The early showings at my theater still have plenty of tickets for those 4pm & 7pm time slots. Even at this rate, Aquaman had already sold them out when they did their early screenings.

The film has something like an $80-$100 million budget. So it needs to make about $270 million worldwide to break even. If it manages good word-of-mouth and ratings, plus the fact that it will play across all 4 quadrants easily, I think Shazam will do just fine.

Does this movie take place in the DC Movie Universe? In the trailer it looks like his foster brother has a Superman hat and a Batman action figure in his bedroom. Don't know if in the DCEU if the heroes are well known enough to the general public to have toys and merchandising made of them.

I'm definitely making a trip to my local theater for this one.
If anyone is interested in the source material to get ready for the movie, I highly recommend checking out the very first Captain Marvel stories from Whiz Comics #2 and up. Easily the best portrayal of the character, even when compared to the modern stuff.

A $40-50M opening IMO for Shazam seems reasonable. It's a mostly unknown Super hero IP to the general public. And it's not like this has a $200M+ budget like Man of Steel. Reports are that it's fairly modest like what Hokeyman alluded to.
Don't expect this to be anywhere near Aquaman, but I think this will make money. Selling tickets 2 weeks early on the 23rd should also get some good word of mouth out there. If the movie was indeed terrible, I don't think WB would have let early social media comments out 1 month early. Movies that are indeed terrible don't get early press screenings. And please don't say that all those social media reactions are paid off WB shills. That's such a tired excuse to justify shedding negative light on something that don't think appeases your expectations.

I think this will be one of those "open modest, get strong word of mouth, make good money over time rather than in the first two weekends" type of movies. I think the Ant-Man and Doctor Strange comparisons are reasonable.

Here's a mini-review from Collider, then an interview with Levi

Here's what the Collider writer thought of the movie:
I absolutely loved Shazam!. Director David F. Sandberg has crafted something special that both comic book movie fans and audiences of all ages will absolutely love. Not only is the film super fun, extremely funny and a big serving of unbridled wish fulfillment, Sandberg grounds the story around family and it’s unlike anything DC has done before. Shazam! is absolutely worth seeing in a theater when it opens April 5th.
Toput it bluntly, "Shazam" was great! The highly anticipated blockbuster is “Big” meets “Superman”. It is a superhero movie, an endearing family film and a heart-felt coming-of-age story all rolled in one. Surprisingly, there are also a number of darker moments that work incredibly well. "Shazam" is a self-contained origin story, of the super being of the same name, but it does take place in the larger DCEU. There are plenty of of DC character references, Easter eggs, nods to previous events and new surprises. The film also has an excellent John Williams-like score that perfectly fits the heroic tone of the film.

Here's probably the most relatable section:
"I’d say the type of violence and scares are comparable to Jurassic Park so if they can handle that it should be fine."

Yes. And be extra cautious if you're expecting "cool", "hip", "groovy", "far-out", "23-Skiddoo" styled jokes what the young kids enjoy. Because pandering is awesome and DCEU is constructing another fail!

So claiming that this movie isn't peddling "hip, cool" humor, and that any of that lowest common denominator audience asking for that will be disappointed, leaves me wincing after an eyeroll sprain.
