it really was a good move. before, he was just another superman, just with lightning powers instead of heat vision (although apparently more popular than superman for a time period).

But this concept of a kid stuck in an adult superhero's body is a great one - and honestly i can't really think of another popular character like that. There was a character named RAGE in the New Warriors books (i used to read those back in the day) who was a teenager whose body rapidly aged into adulthood (but he was still a teenager mentally). He was an Avenger for a short period before they found out he was still a kid, and "demoted" him. Then he helped out the New Warriors (including stealing a Quinjet), and joined up with them.

But other than that, i'm drawing a blank (i'm sure i'm missing an obvious one, i always do when i say there's nothing else like it out there...). So it's pretty unique, and relatable for kids. Should be cool to see on the big screen.

The only one I can think of (other than Mary Marvel) off the top of my head was at least partially inspired by Captain Marvel, and that was the Malibu Ultraverse superhero Prime. Maybe someone like Hawk or Firestorm, but they're not really kids, they're older teenagers.

It was a major plot point in Thundercats, though.

Ah yeah, i never read Prime (heard of it, though). Looks to definitely be inspired by Cap Marvel, but apparently has the ability to "project" different forms of the adult superhero.

Hawk and firestorm are good ones (regarding transformation), although not really a jump from kid to adulthood when they transform, from what i recall. I always took it as their transformations being the same age. But admittedly, what i know of Hawk and Firestorm is DC Animated stuff, not really the comics.

This page brings up one I haven't thought of in ages:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.p.../OlderAlterEgo

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld, way way before the isekai trend happened. And, I guess, Magik from X-men.

For a hot minute back in the 1990s there was serious interest in making a movie about Prime.

Re: Shazam! (2019, D: David F. Sandberg) S: Zachary Levi

I don't read the comics anymore, but DC's animated series and features have had CM as the "Kid in the Adult" body for some time now. In other words, a lovable childlike goof with powers who looks up to the adult JL'ers. Some featured him more serious than others but it's been more or less within a range.

So why are people speaking about CM as if this movie is doing something new?

Read back a page or so, someone said something about his dad saying he remembered CM as something different, as did a few other posters. Some were not aware of the change in the late 80s.

Then I derailed the thread into discussion of other characters that are kids in adult bodies.

The main difference is, like I said before, Johns made the Billy Batson character into a delinquent and that doesn't seem to be the case here, but the setup is similar.

The modern incarnation has pretty much always been that Captain Marvel is basically Billy's idolized version of a superhero crossed with
Spoiler:
his dad, which is why the Kingdom Come surprise works
, and that he's still Billy just in an adult body, ala Big. He's a straight laced superhero because that's what Billy thinks a superhero should act like. I think Johns tried to introduce some modern teenager elements into Billy because a lot of adaptations had him stuck as a "golly gee whiz" teen from the 70s, which is.. hard to relate to. But I think he went too far into "annoying rebellious teen" mode.
Thanks for the info. A movie based on the original version of Captain Marvel (the Fawcett publications) would probably be too corny and dated. I'm not so sure if this one will end up too campy or self-aware (a la DEADPOOL) but we'll see.

No matter how good or bad the movie will be, this is always the first thing I think of when I hear the word Shazam. I used to love this show as a kid.

An old man traveling the around country in a Winnebago with a teenaged boy.

Nothing sketchy about that...

I want to say it was Lionsgate that optioned Prime back in the 1990s. It was one of those situations where it was only likely in case someone had gone forward with a Captain Marvel movie. Hollywood studios love stealing another studio's thunder by releasing a similar movie in the same window.

I was thinking more some kind of Black Adam reveal (he's not in this movie, right?) and save Jr. and Mary for the next one. But I'd love to see CM Jr. if only for the contrast between adult and kid wearing the costume.

Unless it's truly a surprise, I doubt Dwayne Johnson makes a cameo appearance, even in a post credit scene. But who knows...

Back in the days when TV cared so little about character development, that the second lead is called “Mentor”.

Man I hope not, I thought that was one of the dumbest parts of Johns' story.

Agreed. It's the one time I felt Johns was clearly pandering to Hollywood when writing a comic book. It was an obvious ploy to get movie royalties for characters he created.

Rumor:

The movie doesn't come out until April. It's feasible that they could have shot this late. But, take it with a grain of salt for now.

3 films wasn’t enough audience engagement?
