He has flight, strength, speed, and invulnerability. So does Wonder Woman. So does Thor (to a large extent). Some clone.

He doesn't have a host of powers Superman has, as mentioned by fujishig above. And he has mystical lightning powers, as well as some spellcasting abilities, and yes access to the Wisdom of Solomon.

Clone? Copy? Hardly. Big deal.

Okay so not all but he still feels like a second rate Superman. I dunno he’s just a character I’ve never really cared a lot about. He’s fine but just kind of a secondary character who I’d rather see partnered with someone else.

Superman with the serial number filed off and a wizard thrown into his origin instead of a doomed planet.

The character, outwardly, is still very similar to Superman. They're basically going to have two Superman characters in their universe before they can crank out a solo Batman film or Superman sequel. It just seems poorly planned.

Maybe I should clarify, that Captain Marvel seems, to me, to be a copy on the surface.
Mr. Majestic, Supreme, and Icon are some Superman copies.
Rorschach from Watchmen is a copy of The Question.
Many of Alan Moore's characters are copies of other characters.

At the time, Superman didn't have most of those powers.

Come on.
Wonder Woman couldn't even fly back then.
Thor doesn't even look like the Superman archetype.
Considering the look of the character, black haired, buff guy in colorful tight suit with a cape...
The alter ego working in the news industry...
super strength, super speed...
first cover has him throwing a car, Superman's first has him lifting a car...
He looks like a copy.

But another point in your favor, the Captain flew first. DC copied that.
And DC also copied the bald mad scientist. Dr. Sivana was the first.
The Marvel Family too.

Again, I use the term "copy" in a very casual way, in casual conversation, not to insult the integrity of the character or the work put into it.
I don't think the courts should have ruled against Fawcett regardless of what the publisher, artists, or anyone else at Fawcett said.

But he's far from second rate. The original stories of Captain Marvel were better than Superman's, and probably a lot more imaginative.
And the kid secret identity disguise is a lot better than just having a pair of glasses.
The problem is that Fawcett stopped publishing Captain Marvel, Superman stories got awesome in the 60s. When DC started publishing Captain Marvel, THOSE stories then came across as second rate.
Superman is going to get more attention, more creative talent thrown his way because he's their flagship character.

But Captain Marvel's supporting cast and rogues gallery have some great stories. Black Adam and Isis, and the Black Adam family in 52 was really good.
Isis is a cool character but I don't know what happened to her.

Also, check out Paul Dini and Alex Ross's "Shazam! Power of Hope". It's really good.

If Fawcett hadn't lost, maybe Captain Marvel would be as big as Superman is today.
He already has a better costume.

As a kid I always thought "Shazam" was a Mexican bootleg Superman. Even had the disco collar that the guys in my family used to sport.

Re: Shazam! (2019, D: David F. Sandberg) S: Zachary Levi

Many comic book fans have a fondness for Captain Marvel because his Golden Age comics have aged a whole lot better than Superman's early adventures. The art is definitely better.

I like this movie costume. It's bright and doesn't go for an anti-superhero design. Like some others, copying the Alex Ross costume would have probably been better.

What's ironic is that the New 52 Shazam is already gone and hasn't shown up in DC's latest Rebirth line. Many think it will be a return to his more classic roots the next time Captain Marvel gets a comic book.

Well considering basically 90% of most comic characters are copies of someone else, the whole Superman/Captain Marvel knock off debate seems stupid.

Wolverine is a direct ripoff of the Legion of Super-Heroes's Timber Wolf, if you want to be technical. But now I've gone full taffer

Nah, when both were introduced they were very different from each other, but the fact that Cockrum drew both in quick succession plus the fact that he took a lot of ideas he had for the Legion and pushed them onto the X-men (ie: Storm's design) made them both have a similar look.

It's not like, say, the Imperial Guard aping the LoSH or the Squadron Supreme aping the Justice League.

Re: Shazam! (2019, D: David F. Sandberg) S: Zachary Levi

Just for shits and giggles lets put a list of super heroes who either ripped off/stole from other characters:

1. Batman was a combination of Zorro and The Shadow(in fact the very first Batman story plagiarized a Shadow story)

2. Thanos is a knock off of Darkseid

3. Deadpool was a Deathstroke knock off

4. Carnage is knock off of Venom

5. Daredevil started as a Spider-Man knock off

6. Bucky was a Robin rip off

7. Green Arrow started as a Batman rip off

8. The X-Men basically ripped off The Doom Patrol

9. The Shield was a Captain America rip off

My minds drawing a blank on some other ones.

Thor does not even remotely have the power of flight. He throws his hammer and tags along for the ride.

He also is not even remotely invulnerable, as the last movie showed, and has only heightened speed.

Which basically translates to flight, for all intents and purposes.

The movies are one thing. Thor was, power-wise, Marvel Comics's "Superman" figure for decades. Until that "Sentry" garbage in the 90s.

EXACTLY. I'm with Hokey on this but to be honest, both sides have valid points. I also believe Superman is so ICONIC it's impossible to create a powered Hero without Superman being somewhere in that Heroes creative DNA. Superman is a Blueprint for Powerful Male Superheroes.

I hate to Mike86 this thread but is this supposed to be a comedy? Spoof? Teen movie? What? Everything I’ve seen, from the logo posted above to the cast to the set photos, this looks like it would be right at home on Monday nights on the CW.

If it helps, I did enjoy Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman, and Justice League to various degrees.
