Alien plant/Hidden face in E.T.

Based on a comment I read at IMDb, I watched ET again today. There is some kind of living organism on ET's ship at the begining of the film. In the first minutes of the film, on board ET's ship there is a tree with a face and its mouth is seen moving. It looks like this mouth/face thing is supposed to be one of the plant specimens that ET and his crew have picked up from another planet.

Has Spielberg ever commented on this? Was it some kind of abandoned concept? It's really weird.

I don't recall this, but I read a sequel novel years ago that put forth the idea that ET's species were intergalactic botanists, and picked up samples from all over the universe.

I think they also mention it in the book included in the Ultimate Gift Edition.

in the novelization of the book, yes that was made quite clear they were botanists. In the movie, there is a Triffod amongst the plants.

I think a screencap would be very useful.

i'm serious, it's even mentioned over at imdb:

The extraterrestrial's plant collection includes a triffid (from The Day of the Triffids (1962)).

Wasn't the ET ride at Universal Studios full of strange plants?

Jesus this is the biggest DVD forum on the internet. You'd think we'd have a screen cap within the hour.

Here it is. It does move and you can sort of see the face. I've done an amazing artists rendition of the face. Prints will be available in various sizes...

Edit, I looked up the Triffid thing and that certainly isn't what this is.

Yes, it does look a bit "Treebeard-ish". I looked in the book that came with the big DVD boxset, and there is a mention of an abandoned concept of two plants that whipped each other and fought with their vine-like appendages. Apparently this was filmed, but not used. While that does not sound like the Plant/Face, it proves that concepts were developed for living plants that moved. This Plant/Face thing seems to be a similar concept.

I have to say, all this stuff about the plants on the ship is actually more interesting than the main plot of E.T.
