I am glad Flanagan seems to be a member of Netflix's wheelhouse directors, more freedom for him to do whatever crazy shit he feels like.

I watched it as soon as it was available. It was really damn good, very faithful to the source material. There’s even a couple of Easter eggs for King fans.

I'd give it a solid 3/5. Pretty well done with good performances.

Re: Stephen King's GERALD'S GAME (D: Mike Flanagan) S: Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood

Wow, this was a great film! So much depth for such a short enough film -- clocks in at a little over an hour and half without credits.

Also, Greenwood is 61 and has the body of a 30 year old physically fit dude. I was impressed. Carla is a Goddess, so no surprise there.

I was captivated by the story and yes, there is one scene in particular, that is quite disturbing.

If the quality of King's film adaptations keeps going like this then I'm all for Netflix acquiring the rights and have them takeover going forward. Now I'm really looking forward to 1922.

You're not kidding. The man's physique is impressive for a 40-year-old, much less 61.

What the shit was that? It completely fell apart in the last 20 or so minutes. I'm not familiar with the source material but it wasn't what the trailer led me to believe it would be.

Those plus:
Spoiler:
Jessie forms a telepathic link with Delores Claiborne during the eclipse in the book, this is referenced. Also, Gerald says “all things serve the Beam” an obvious Dark Tower reference.

Good to see Elliot from ET grew up to be such a good movie father.
Spoiler:
and holy shit did that scene make me cringe

The last 20 minutes really are so far out of left field. I dug them but it really was just crazy in the weirdest possible way.

This was really good. Ending felt kind of like a cop-out but I understand the story basically ends the same way. The journey there is really satisfying.

I convinced my wife (who is NOT a horror fan) to watch this. She begrudgingly admitted that she liked it. But she nearly jumped off the couch when

Spoiler:
Jess dreams that she wakes up to find the Moonlight Man gnawing on her foot.

Those are my favorite kinds of jump-scares: where the jump comes from what you are suddenly seeing, not because you are just suddenly seeing something (like a cat). These kinds of jumps earn their place, and leave a more lasting impression.

just watched this and it was pretty good.

Greenwood body did look strange at times, like his head was too big. But I agree if that is his body and way would they add a body double... he is fucking fit for a 61 year old. lol

Re: Stephen King's GERALD'S GAME (D: Mike Flanagan) S: Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood

I haven't read the book, so I don't know how it compares ...

A decent psychological thriller until it turns into utter gibberish. Obviously there were points cut from the book, but the end seems as if they was some important stuff left on the cutting room floor.

So ... her trauma is that her dad spanked one out. I found this kind of insulting when she founded a nonprofit to help rape survivors. I'm not saying it isn't gross and terrible, but ... come on ... really?

Why were cops and coroners and reporters combing the house? Why was a lawyer having a heart attack during sex with his wife so scandalous that it needed covered up? At best that would be a page 7 story that we would make fun of in the Other Forum.

So ... she finds out the monster in her childhood dreams was real when she was an adult ... and he was really a mentally deficient and physically deformed hillbilly who robbed graves and became a serial killer. Yet he showed up in the house to ... watch her sleep?

Don't feed stray dogs. Nothing to add there.

The serial killer is more prominent in the book for sure. It’s an ongoing plot point, the question of whether he’s real or a hallucination. There was so little build up in the movie I’m surprised the character wasn’t cut completely.

One of the best King adaptations. Period. Up there with Shawshank, Misery and Cujo.

Re: Stephen King's GERALD'S GAME (D: Mike Flanagan) S: Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood

Caught this tonight and really enjoyed it! Carla Gugino is simply beautiful so it wasn’t difficult watching her in a nighty for an hour and a half. I didn’t feel the ending was a let down, a little out of left field, but not a let down, it seemed to stick with the down-to-earth story being told and didn’t get too wild.

The acting and directing were wonderful! Flanagan did a great job filming the reality and hallucinations with the various characters fading in and out in a way that made the film play out clearly when it EASILY could have been a complete mess.

Next up: 1922!

Netflix is really earning my money lately!

Re: Stephen King's GERALD'S GAME (D: Mike Flanagan) S: Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood

I read the book a long time ago, but from what I recalled, this seemed like a pretty faithful adaptation. As a father of a pre-teen girl, the dad storyline was difficult to watch. I think I cringed more with that than the "escape" scene. The escape scene was really well done though. I did shake my head when she dumped the remaining water instead of drinking it. The ending did feel a little off from the rest of the movie, but as a frequent King reader, I know he tends to do that.

Re: Stephen King's GERALD'S GAME (D: Mike Flanagan) S: Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood

Around 15 years ago on a long road trip (~1000 miles roundtrip), a friend and I listened to this novel in audiobook form for the trip. And despite the length of the drive there and back, we almost were back before the audiobook ended!

Now I liked the book... except for the epilogue, which was dragged out by Stephen King for quite a while talking about the Moonlight guy. But even though the majority of the novel was good, I didn't think the book was filmable due to the story being almost entirely the thoughts of one character.

I'm glad that I was wrong about that and these filmmakers figured out how to make the unfilmable "filmable". Having her hallucinate her husband and herself worked so well in this movie that now I see how wrong I was in calling it unfilmable. And I was really glad that they shrunk the so-so epilogue down to a manageable segment that it didn't ruin what came before. This is a great adaptation of a Stephen King story.

Now I was already a fan of Mike Flanagan's horror movie "Oculus" - but seeing how good this adaptation came out makes me want to see his other movies too. Mike Flanagan seems to me like he's another James Wan - in other words, a filmmaker who knows how to make a good horror movie.
