Fantastic story and the actors are brilliant as usual. Direction is phenonemal.
Scorsese is a brilliant director and his other films are excellent as well, but the subject matter of sociopathic, mafiaoso lifestyles is a major turn off for me.
He still gets my time attention and respect. His latest The Departed was down right incredible. Go Marty!

I love Goodfellas ...
... but Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are a notch above it. Goodfellas some of its drive in the last bit of the movie. Henry trying to evade the cops is well done technically, but it's nowhere as nearly emotionally engaging as Henry's relationship with the mob.

Goodfellas: Awesome. A true tour de force. Epic in scope. A film that is at once compelling.
Casino: Great. Also epic in scope. Very evil. Very dark. Cold, calculating. Sharon Stone's best work ever. She will never reach that level again.
Departed: Great. Probably the only film of his where justice prevails.
Gangs of New York: Fantastic. Brutal depiction of life. The characters make Klingons look like Japanese school girls.

You think I'm funny?! I can see how the OP feels about Ray Liotta though. Personally, I think he's probably the weakest actor in the entire cast (IMHO of course). But man, does Pesci and De Niro ever make up for it! Goodfellas is in my high rotation list.

GoodFellas is a movie I liked the first time I saw it and improves with each viewing. The only way I'd call it overrated though is when people say it's better than The Godfather. HELL FREAKIN' NO!!!
The Departed is overrated IMO. Infernal Affairs is 10 times better.
I love Casino. Joe Pesci owned that movie. I don't know whether to laugh or get chills when he explains to Charlie the banker what he does for a living.

Goodfellas is overrated to me...the kind of movie where once you've seen it, you really don't need or want to see it again. It's an alright movie, but far from Scorcese's best. I also thought Casino was just an awful movie.
However, I also feel that The Godfather movies are grossly overrated, as well as The Sopranos. ...and Al Pacino's Scarface may be my most hated movie of all time.
I guess the mobster stuff just doesn't impress me much in general.

Infernal Affairs lacks any sense of character development. It gives thrills, but no fun. The characters are bland and seem sterile compared to those in The Departed. It's still a very good film, but Scorsese did what the original directors did, only better. There's a reason one version won four Oscars while the other did not even pick up a nomination for Best Foreign Film when it was submitted by Hong Kong in its' year.

Goodfellas is definitely not overrated.

I need to see it again, but the first time I was kinda underwhelmed. "The Wonder Years" of gangster movies. I absolutely love Casino, but I wasn't nearly as drawn into GoodFellas. I plan to get the Scorsese Warner box and watch it again.

I like the film, yes, and would perfer not to be called crazy for liking it. I see nothing wrong with you favouring Infernal Affairs more, but why not just let others have their own opinion? Don't take the "why the fuck do you care" comment personally, it's directed at your calling Departed fans crazy for liking it more than Infernal Affairs.

And I say this as someone who prefers INFERNAL AFFAIRS (although I also loved THE DEPARTED and felt it deserved all its accolades). The original had deeper, more complex characters, while the remake painted them in more delineated shades of black and white. Still, there's room in the world to love both.

It's like Goodfellas only without Ray Liotta and with De Niro as a likeable character. Comparing Goodfellas to another similiar film; Donnie Brasco, is also another film I find vastly superior to Goodfellas.
