The movie had a comic book style to it, hell we give Dick Tracy a pass for making it look like a comic strip, I don't know why we won't give this movie one. Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carey were way over the top, but I think that making the movie have a more goofy and light tone makes sense do to the introduction of Robin.

Really all four Batman movies are really similar to the comics because each one has a different feel to it. Batman was like someone's take on the original Batman stories. Batman Returns was Tim Burton's take on Batman, Forever was a homage to the 60's and the Bill Finger stories. And B&R was someone's idea of how to sell toys. Though I would still love to see a directors cut of this. I'm actually really surprised that WB hasn't done one yet.

I remember having a good time when I saw BATMAN FOREVER on the big screen and I generally agree with your assessments, esp. the bolded ones. I definitely felt I was watching an old Batman comic translated to the screen in the appropriate comic book style. The Batman comics I grew up with were always kind of surreal anyway, with lots of bright colors and splash and noise and the movie matched that. BATMAN RETURNS was, like you say, Burton's personal take on Batman, which is fine for Burton's hardcore fans, but not necessarily for the rest of us who just wanted a Batman movie.

Look dude… lets just agree both burton and shumakcer came out the gate strong but faded in the stretch.

I still like Batman Forever, and probably the Batman movie I can always watch in the background given the tone and "fun" of the movie.

I think we are lucky we gotten many shades of Batman throughout the years, a flavor for each person

Re: Batman Forever

When Batman Forever came out I liked it. Looking back, that's probably because on some levels it is a better movie than Batman Returns. Batman Returns was schizophrenic - the Catwoman stuff was very good, but the Penguin stuff was awful. Burton really screwed up the Penguin side of the story.

Batman Forever seemed like a breath of fresh air after Batman Returns, but when I watched it again last year I was stunned by how bad it was. I always had a problem with Jim Carrey's Riddler (he's a wimp, where Frank Gorshin's Riddler was more of a vicious gangster type with a twisted sense of humor), but I had forgotten how bad the rest of the movie is. Tommy Lee Jones' Two Face was over the top, and the style of the movie was over the top camp, too. It may not be as bad as Batman and Robin, but it's still bad.

None of the original 1980's & 1990's Batman movies were very good. The first one was OK, but the rest are pretty bad. Had Burton not screwed up the Penguin side of Batman Returns it could have been a really good movie, but he did screw up the Penguin so the movie is partly crap.

There's a difference between people giving a movie a pass and people not caring. The reason no one complains about Dick Tracy is because no one cares. Seriously, that movie hasn't been relevant to the culture in over 20 years.

Aww. I liked Dick Tracy. We are talking about films based on comic book/comic strip characters yes? What do people expect? Even most of the bad ones get a pass from me.

Re: Batman Forever

I thought Dick Tracy was an okay movie. The use of just seven colors for the film, the 1930s era, and the gangster caricatures made it interesting.

Batman Forever is just garish, campy, loud and too much going on all the time.

I used to jerk off to Nicole Kidman in this movie a lot.

Other than that, it pretty much sucks.

Re: Batman Forever

I liked the movie at the time and still find it enjoyable. Carrey and Lee Jones ham it up, but it fits with the style of Batman they are going for. Kilmer was a good Batman. I liked the difference in style of movie between this and the previous two. It was certainly more towards a comic book format. It also had the U2 song Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me which i really loved and is still one of my favorite tracks.

Last year i wanted to revisit Batman and Robin to see if it was as bad as i remember.....and it was even worse. That was a mess of a movie and actually a remake of Batman Forever. I was thinking of the sequences of the movie and they are identical. I would write it all here, but i just found something someone else wrote that explains it for me.

Batman Forever and Batman And Robin are silly films but still better than the Nolan Trilogy. I can't even remember the plots to either BF or BaR but they can't be any worse than taking a city hostage to see if the people will turn on each other or because you have daddy issues.

Re: Batman Forever

What I found funny (and not in a good way) about BATMAN AND ROBIN was that every one of the stars seemed to be acting in a completely different movie from everybody else. It's as if the director had told each of the stars that they were the star of the film and not any of the others. I was gonna say that the best thing about it was Drew Barrymore but then I looked her up to make sure and she wasn't even in it. She was in BATMAN FOREVER, another reason I like that movie. That's the best thing I've seen her in. She had a glamorous old-school movie star quality in it that she seems to have downplayed since.

I'm sorry but saying "Batman and Robin" is better than the Nolan films is just, I don't know beyond.. I can't even...I'm sorry for your soul

There's internet trolling but anyone that honestly thinks B&R is better than the Nolan flicks needs an extended stay in Arkham.

Re: Batman Forever

Considering who it's coming from I'm not surprised. He's one of the bigger Nolan Batman haters around the boards. Either way though yes it's a ridiculous statement to say that Batman & Robin is better than the Nolan films. That's probably one of the worst films made out of any genre of film.

I will say that Batman Forever was the only movie I ever found Nicole Kidman to be hot in.
