Hasbro toys with Morris
Toy company switches agencies
By MARC GRASERHasbro is picking up its toys and taking them over to the William Morris Agency.
The Pawtucket, R.I.-based company, which has been repped by CAA for the past four years, is switching tenpercenteries just as "Transformers," a movie based on one of its most popular toy lines, is gearing up to stomp into theaters July 3.

William Morris will work on contemporizing Hasbro's brands, which include Monopoly, Ouija, Candy Land, Clue and Trivial Pursuit, and turn them into movies, TV shows or videogames.

The agency's already started packaging its writer, director and producer clients with Hasbro's brands.

"Our focus is on creating immersive brand experiences for Hasbro's brands," said Brian Goldner, the toymaker's chief operating officer, who is also an exec producer on "Transformers." "We felt our partnership with William Morris would enable us to activate our brands in the right entertainment forms and create those experiences over time."

In one of William Morris' initial moves with regard to the new relationship, it reupped Hasbro's deal with Paramount Pictures to turn "G.I. Joe" into a live-action feature with Lorenzo di Bonaventura to produce. An initial pact had expired.

Move to WMA resulted, in part, from the close relationship Hasbro's execs formed with William Morris agents during the development and production of "Transformers."

WMA reps director Michael Bay, producer Tom DeSanto and General Motors, whose vehicles portray many of the film's shape-shifting robots.

Hasbro sees itself as another potential Marvel -- a company with a stable of brands that could easily translate into entertainment properties that could help its bottom line.

"We've always believed in the power of our brands," Goldner said. "Many of the folks creating entertainment are now realizing that our toys and games have great histories and generations of people playing with our products and have a certain power and opportunity."

In addition to setting up "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe," CAA had brokered content deals for Tiger Electronics' VideoNow player and paired up Hasbro's sports brands such as Nerf and Lazer Tag with the Vans Warped Tour. Steven Spielberg, a producer on "Transformers," is repped by CAA.

So are the Ouija board amd Trivial Pursuit going to be turned into movies, TV shows, or videogames? Not that I see the first to possibilities as viable options...

God I want a GI Joe movie so bad.....

I always liked this concept art:

GIJOE this image appeared in ToyFare #81 as the opener for an interview with G.I.JOE film producer LORENZO DiBONAVENTURA. The illustration represents Toyfare's "Dream Cast" with Viggo Mortensen as Duke, Monica Bellucchi as Baroness, and Jennifer Garner as Scarlett.

Sgt. Slaughter better show up.

"This one's for Duke!"

Interesting someone else thought of Jolie from Alexander as Baroness. The scenes of her fondling the snakes are perfect ops. for photoshopping! :D

Didn't that get cancelled in favor of Candyland, a film a bout underaged drug trafficers in Colombia that discover the meaning of Christmas?

Oh boy:

Title Note: (4/19/07) Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed recently that the title of this movie adaptation of the "G.I. Joe" toy line may not even be called that, due to the needs of marketing internationally. Instead, this will be a "buddy movie" between the G.I. Joe character of Duke, and "Action Man", a toy similar to G.I. Joe that is popular in other countries (source: IGN Movies).

Apparently, Paramount has commissioned two different scripts for the G.I. Joe film adaptation:

One is the god-awful Skip Woods (Swordfish) script that was leaked.

And of the other:

A few years ago Paramount hired David Elliot and Paul Lovett (Four Brothers) to write a draft that was more of a straight-up adaptation of the series. That script (read LR's positive review here) included Duke, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Hi-Tech, Heavy Duty, Wild Bill, General Hawk and General Flagg. The villains were Destro, the Baroness, Storm Shadow and Cobra. And now, in an unusual move, Paramount is asking both parties to finish their scripts at the same time. Woods will complete his first draft, Elliot and Lovett will begin a third draft.

John C. McGinley would be perfect for this movie.

I liked the Mummy movies, but Van Helsing was terrible, so I am a little worried now. The G.I. Joe movie's action scenes need to be like Top Gun or a Ridley Scott movie. Everything needs to be shot live and real as much as possible. If Sommers gets the job, we may be stuck with ridiculous CGI like Van Helsing.

Stephen Sommers set to take the helm on GI JOE!

Looks like Stephen Sommers is the new man in charge at GI Joe Headquarters!

The word is that Paramount has offered Stephen “Mummy Wrangler” Sommers the task of bringing the next old school icon back to the big screen. It looks like rather than sticking with either the Skip Woods origin story or Elliot/Lovett’s more straight out adaptation they will be focusing on a mash-up of the two.

What’s unclear is what this means for Sommer’s remake of When Worlds Collide which is supposedly in pre-production as I type this.

Is Mark Walberg still strapping on Duke’s boots? IESB got the original scoop on his casting and it stands to reason he's still onboard but it's Hollywood so you never know.

Could GI Joe be the next Transformers? Hard to say without any giant fucking robots on screen to wow people they are going to need some serious action and big names to get that level of hype...oh yeah and casting two INSANELY hot chicks for Scarlett and the Baroness couldn't hurt either....and by all means my place is available for casting calls.

Now the real big question that fans are going to hit on is the most obvious one: Is Sommers the right man for the job?

No matter who steps in, there is going to be some negative and positive reaction to the choice...ask Michael Bay. Sommers has proven he can make a fun action adventure popcorn flick, but he's also dropped a major ball with Van Helsing...only time and boxes of bullets will tell.

Much like an agent of Cobra; IESB will be lurking about Paramount’s dark halls gathering more GI Joe Intel.

If you want a fun G.I. Joe movie, get Michael Bay.
If you want a serious G.I. Joe movie, get Michael Mann.

Looks like GEORGE CLOONEY is being courted to play Duke.

Wow. That's pretty A list for this film.

Can we get these other 2 threads merged in here so we only have 1 thread for this film please?

What's A list about Clooney? (besides his undeserved paychecks)

Also did anyone else here about GI Joe no longer being an "American Hero" but part of a global task force in Belgium? Terrible idea if true.

GuessWho 10-30-07 05:07 PM

G.I. Joe will become an acronym for "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity"

Global task force = true.

The Belguim was a thing rumoured way back in an early script draft, but has since been confirmed that they will be based out of the USA

Even if you don't care for him, it's pretty obvious that he's an A list star to the general public.

He hasn't had anything huge, but it doesn't matter. He's in the public eye, he's popular, and he won an Oscar, and has put out some films that have been received well critically. Do you only judge the "A list" term by box office success? I think the general idea of an A List star would include Clooney easily.

Pretty much... I'm just more of a bottom-line, just the facts kinda guy. I like Clooney... he just doesn't seem necessary in this concept-driven pic (although it makes all the sense in the world for him to hop aboard a pic that will be big regardless).

Damed 10-31-07 08:14 AM

More info:

Budget is $170 million. (wow!)

This will be going in to production soon. They state that the Clooney report is false, as well.
