Weekend Box Office Thread (2/9 - 2/11)

Friday's Estimates

1. NORBIT $10,750,000
2. HANNIBAL RISING $4,900,000
3. BECAUSE I SAID SO $2,785,000
4. THE MESSENGERS $2,375,000
5. EPIC MOVIE $1,255,000
6. NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM $1,250,000
7. SMOKIN' ACES $1,190,000
8. PAN'S LABYRINTH $1,000,000
9. DREAMGIRLS $810,000
10. STOMP THE YARD $675,000

Looks like Thomas Harris may have finally succeeded in milking Silence of the Lambs for all it was worth. The black-man-dressing-as-a-fat-black-woman comedy, however, still has a lot of steam left in it. Tyler Perry will be pleased.

Matthew Chmiel 02-10-07 09:41 PM

To be honest, I'm surprised Hannibal Rising made $4 million yesterday. I was assuming it would make that much total during the entire weekend.

Yep. Maybe they'll bring back a geriatric Hopkins as Lecter for the next one to spice things back up. Attack people from a wheelchair.

They've really been pimping it all over the TV for the past two weeks. I thought name-recognition alone would bring in more people than that, but I guess without Anthony Hopkins, they weren't able to drum up much excitement.

BravesMG 02-10-07 10:19 PM

I really can't believe that number for Norbit. That's looking at a 25-30 million opening weekend, and probably cruising to a 100+ total. I would have said that Norbit was going to tank terribly, and obviously I would have been very wrong.

Obviously discriminating moviegoers are racing to their local theaters to see just how bad these movies are - according to Rotten Tomatoes:

2% - Epic Movie
7% - Because I Said So
16%- Hannibal Rising
9% - Norbit

(...makes that 45% for Museum look good!)

Daytripper 02-10-07 11:51 PM

According to boxofficereport.com's early weekend estimates, "Pan's Labyrinth" only had a 6% drop from last weekend. That's great news. Word of mouth has been phenominal for this film.

Yes I can't wait for his return as "Big Momma" in Daddy's Little Girls.

Rockmjd23 02-11-07 01:29 PM

They should make a movie with Norbit, Madea, Big Momma, and The Klumps and just end it all.

Simpson Purist 02-11-07 02:48 PM

Very, very shocked at how much money Norbit made.

That's a Tyler Perry film, but as far as I know it does not have Madea in it.

There's clearly a large audience for men dressing as overweight black women, which really skeeves me out about the society we live in.

Geez, the damn thing won't go away :)

matome 02-11-07 06:23 PM

10% drop? What are we back in, the early 90's?

NEVER underestimate the power that teens have over the weekend box office. After all, they need a place to hang out in for 2 hours so they can text each other and throw popcorn.

Libby 02-11-07 09:00 PM

Proof that January and February are dead months for movies when Norbit makes that much!

Yup, there definitely is. Dave Chappelle said when he was pitched a movie about basically doing the same thing, he said no, and the studio told him that all the big black comedians do it, therefore he should.

MadTV did a skit of this a while back, and they included the White Chicks as well.
